Hey even legally, one hit is self-defence.
I think as long as you weren't the escalator (made things worse) you're in the clear.
And in response to your next comment... I think you need to remember that helping people who don't want to be helped doesn't work. And people who drink because they are upset or fucked up usually like to pity themselves. And people who like to pity themselves usually don't want to be helped. You're right when you say you're not an asylum. You're not qualified for this sort of thing. Plus dealing with these kinds of people often tends to eventually leave a mark on your soul. :/
