C&C Application

I really hate making applications public, it seems akin to lifting up one's skirt. But I figure this could be useful if you wanted to see how the hell I got into the game.

[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: James "Bucky" Barnes
FANDOM: Marvel 616
CHRONOLOGY: c. that flashback in Avengers #4- basically after he died
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Alarmingly, his codename is also Bucky
ALTER EGO: See above

BACKGROUND:
Until 2005 Bucky's job was to be Jason Todd level dead. He was like the case in the Batcave, except Bucky always wore pants and so there could be no shrine to his scaley panties. Basically, a dead sidekick plot device slash symbol of past failures and Mistakes Our Hero Cannot Take Back. A ghost, more than an actual character. This explains his somewhat fractured history and tendency to have his personality totally overhauled every decade or so. It's not like he made continuous appearances anyway!!

Post-2005 he has made the unlikely journey from dead to Soviet cyborg assassin to reformed Soviet cyborg assassin to being Captain America to being Captain America jailed for war crimes because that's what you get for being a Soviet cyborg assassin. At some point, Bucky actually went through puberty, and now he wanders through Marvel 616 in seemingly constant need of a shave.

Now let's try this from an in-universe perspective:

James Buchanan Barnes was born in vagueish late winter months of 1925, apparently in Shelbyville, Indiana. (Thanks, Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe.) His father was an Army man and travelled a bunch and his mother has never really been mentioned, probably because she died at some point. Near Christmas of 1937, Bucky's father died in a parachute accident. For some reason they just let the twelve year old boy live on base alone for four years. It was the responsible thing to do.

After the death of his father Bucky became something of a bully, picking fights, stealing cars, running minor cons and black market operations. This made him a prime role model for America's youth. After getting drunk on his sixteenth birthday and spending the night in jail, Bucky basically got sent off to killing school because they had to do something productive with him. Orphans: America's favorite weapons.

Bucky completed his special forces training and was then introduced to Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Steve would become Bucky's best friend, and also provided the moral stability Bucky'd been lacking since his father died. As Captain America's partner, Bucky wore his underwear outside of his pants and served as a popular counter to the Hitler Youth. And he killed a whole bunch of Nazis. Vampire Nazis, giant robot Nazis, flying Nazis, zombie Nazis, a Nazi who was a dominatrix. One time Hitler summoned Thor, but Thor mindwiped everyone into forgetting he was once a Nazi. Bucky's WW2 service was thus ludicrously varied, as he fought mundane, even quasi-historical, battles while also regularly teaming up with the flying panty-wearing prince of Atlantis.

In April of 1945, Bucky managed to strap himself to a bomb and explode over the English channel.

Then he became a semi-lucid KGB killing machine. No really. This won an Eisner.

PERSONALITY:
Bucky is extremely self-assured, and can get pretty cocky. He's an extrovert who is unashamed of his own view point, and sometimes says things just to have something to say. Likes to have fun, likes to crack jokes, and likes to keep a sense of levity in the air.

The confidence thing is not an act, but he still sometimes suffers a bit of jealousy about not having powers. While he's not a bully anymore, Bucky can be deliberately cruel. He sometimes says things just to provoke a reaction, can spin tall tales and outright lie. His light-hearted, constantly moving personality is part of his way of coping with things. His way of coping with things is not really coping with them. Bucky's something of a champion at compartmentalization. He's a cynic by nature who has seen human beings at their absolute worst. Luckily though, he's seen them at their absolute best, and that tempers his outlook something fierce. Bucky tries to do the right thing, but being a good person is not written on his soul- he manages pretty well, on balance, but it is a struggle.

The military has been a huge influence on his life, and I'd say his ethic is primarily one of service and sacrifice. Bucky is physically brave in the extreme and he flat-out enjoys fighting, maybe a bit more than is healthy.

POWER:
Canonically Bucky has no powers. He is a skilled combatant.

I'd like to give him the power of being immune to mind control/telepathy. (Thx Gabbie!) It's something he sort of gets later on in canon after being...mind controlled repeatedly.
