I'm right there with you. This entire meme seems designed to make people who had parents who actually cared about their children be ashamed of it. Disgusting. I aim to turn this entire list black for my kids.

I wanted to thank you for writing this sweetie, I have been labeled as "Privileged" and I am tierd of people making me feel bad for it. I went to the private school, I am very glad I did because a teacher was able to notice my learning disbility and I was able to get help. My parents made sacrafices for me and my brother to be able to do it, we don't have 4 cars, infact, my mom hasn;t gotten a new car in 23 years, also, my parents chose to wait 10 years after they married to have children so they could afford to give their kids what they didn't have. My dad always told me: "money can be taken and given, but education can NEVER be lost". When i was in New York I was made to feel bad that my parents gave me Spending money, even though i was always willing to pay for my friends so that we could enjoy en evening out, they accused me of trying to buy their firend ship when i was only try to share what I had with people I cared about. And they did instill values in us, this year for christmas my mother made a donation for my brother ( ... )

Um... White Elephant Sale? I felt lucky that you and your brother didn't care about clothes being new or trendy (or at least you didn't tell me if you did!). Hope all that second hand stuff didn't scar you too much ;-)

It's never about if you have privilege, but completely about if you recognize it and realize that not everyone lives that way. It's one thing to have it and appreciate it, but another to say "Well, we're better than them anyhow for xyz reason"-at least that's how I see it. I've had friends from two-income homes who realize what I face off with, and seen people who were far from what's considered "status quo" who still don't know that there will be glass ceilings they hit later-I think you're far from qualifying as the latter, so you have nothing to worry about. *hugs*.

Agreed. The problem doesn't come from the simple fact of being "privileged". It comes from when the person with those privileges do not understand just how damned fortunate they are to have them. These are the same people who have the audacity to say that a person who doesn't have, or is unable to provide those privileges, are lazy or stupid or unfit in some other way, shape or form. What's that you say Jimmy? You can't afford health insurance even though you're working 13 hour days, 7 days a week while squeezing in vocational training in hopes of getting out of the ghetto apartment that you're in and into some place where you don't have to duck bullets while trying to get to work, and eating nothing but ramen and bread? That's because you're lazy! You just need to work harder ( ... )

I'm not sure if we've met in person. I stumbled across your journal through boredom and random LJ meandering. I'm a friend of both J's and blackberry74. Although...I did go to Dickens one year and was whisked around by S, so there's a chance that we might have met.

My mind has been a bit hazy for the past few months, so you'll have to check with her to be sure. Plus, she can probably describe me better (or worse, depending...)
