I heard a panel on this at the SDS conference. It was really intersting as I had known about amputee devotees but not deaf ones. Allison Kafer spoke and then this other gal whose name I don't have written down. They were both good papers. She talked a lot about the folks who make themselves deaf, they aren't just "pretending" and then talked about ableism and talkd about a trans analolgy.
I'm contemplating joining the list so I can offer to trade my old, crappy, broken-down, $2,000-when-new analog hearing-aids for their spiffy new digital ones. Them's things expensive.
I'd like some pretty blue ones, please. Or, as I said to the audiologist: "This color is called caucasian, not 'flesh tone.'"
*snickers* Mine are a funny colour ... I can't imagine anyone whose flesh tone they would match. And my friend? She is a *very* light-skinned Jew and her BTE units are an odd chocolatey brown. *looks perplexed* Her ear moulds, however, are purple and glittery!

I know that Deaf people have been fetishized, but I never really considered the whole "playing deaf" part.

Losing your hearing as an adult *is* scary. Have you gone to an audiologist and pinpointed a reason?
