Chapter 2
His vision blurred for a moment.
The girl held a cup to his mouth.
It was filled with blood. His stomach rolled with revulsion, but she forced him to drink. Finally, the world stopped spinning, and he looked up at her. “A plan?” He asked.
She nodded, smiling brilliantly. “I have a little… problem… to take care of, and I could use your special… skills.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“Don’t worry about that. You’ll have enough time to learn.”
“Time? I don’t understand.”
“We have about… two hundred years to go.”
“Who… who are you?”
“Details, Nathan, don’t worry about them.”
“How did you know my name?” His head swam again, and he closed his eyes against it.
The cool hand returned to his forehead.
“Sleep, my dear. Sleep and learn…” The last few words were whispered.
Maybe he imagined them.
“And share with him.”

Lucas saw the girl, Sandra, again the next day. She was sitting in the breezeway, wearing matching fishnet tights and fingerless gloves. Her skirt was knee length, purple and filled with lace and ruffled, along with a matching top. The look was finished with black lipstick and heavy eyeliner.
He started to change direction, but was too late.
“Lucas!” She called, waving him over. “Did you manage to get to sleep last night?”
“Sleep? What’s that?”
Snickering, she lit a cigarette. “Oh, you know… something that happens when you close you eyes. Your brain shuts down, and you rest. Then you dream.”
“Dream?” He sat on the bench next to her. “I had a strange dream right before I woke up this morning… Both times.”
“A strange dream?” With an unfocused gaze, she watched him.
“Yeah. I must be hanging out with Aaron too much, because I was drinking blood in the second one. Funny, huh?”
She blinked. “Oh. Why haven’t I learned to look ahead when it comes to this shit?”
“What?”
She shook her head. “Never mind, sweetie. So why did you have trouble sleeping? Was last night too disturbing?”
“In the fact that I now have a seemingly sugar high caffeinated vampire after my bodily fluids, yes.”
“Oh baby, didn’t Aaron tell you anything? Or, haven’t you ever watched a vampire movie? They can’t come into your home, or in our case, a dorm room unless you invite them.”
“Really?”
She blinked. “This is going to be a long, uphill battle.”
“Wha-? Oh, you were making a remark on my stupidity. I’m not dumb, I just don’t get this. Like, I always see Aaron in the daytime. I thought sunlight was supposed to vaporize them or something.”
“Depends on the legend, and what family the vampire is from, and a whole bunch of other, boring factors. Lets just say that Aaron is old enough to not worry about it, and Nathan is genetically blessed.”
“If Aaron’s so old, why is he in school?”
“Because you always need to learn more, and update what you thought you knew.” Aaron spoke.
How the hell he managed to blend into almost non-existent shadows, Lucas would never figure out, and almost screamed at the shock. Thankfully, he recovered in time, and simply clutched at his heart.
Sandra stood, crushing her cigarette underneath her boot. “Nathan will meet us at the car.”
“Good.” Aaron nodded, and grabbed Lucas’ arm. “Lets go.”
“Where are we going?” He asked.
“Dinner. We have some things to discuss with you and Nathan.”
“He doesn’t know the whole story?” Aaron glanced at her while they dragged Lucas to the parking lot.
“There was never a need, and Nathan isn’t the curious type. At least not after five minutes.”
“Is he that easily distracted?”
“Flash the right shiny thing, yeah.”
“Are you sure about this?”
“It will work.” A muttered “it has to work.”
“What’s going on?!” Lucas finally cried.
Nathan jumped off the hood of a red car Lucas hadn’t even realized they’d stopped at. “That’s what we’re going to find out.” He grinned and moved closer. “You’re looking especially delicious today.”
“Get in the car Nathan.” Sandra’s voice broke in. “We’re going to eat real food first.”
“Cool!” He slid into the backseat.
Lucas blinked, then lunged for a door. “Shotgun, dammit, shotgun!”

“Nathan wasn’t exaggerating. The boy is his soul mate.”
“And you didn’t see this happening?”
“If you recall, I wasn’t looking at that aspect of their destinies. I was looking for the two other anchors.”
“Please, don’t remind me. I remember, all too damn well.”
“Once I found them, I didn’t bother revisiting. I had other things to worry about then every aspect of what would happen. I knew Nathan had a soul mate, I just didn’t connect the two.”
“So your revisited then?”
“I had to. He had the dreams I sent… at least two of them.”
“Therefore, you wanted to double check the facts?” Laughter. “Did you actually make a mistake and not foresee everything right away, Lady Destiny.”
“Shut the fuck up, and don’t call me that.”
“I know how you could shut me up.”
A wrist was held out and teeth sank into it.
“If you try to talk with your mouth full this time, I will not hesitate to stake your ass.”
