Awwww!! That makes me sad, I liked Sam (because he's played by Jared XP).

Wow. So was it like, a completely definite thing, or did they leave it open for him to come back?

He did come back. Dean made a deal with a demon to bring him back to life, and now Dean has a year before the demon comes for his soul. Sam's determined to find a way to fix it though.
