Castiel called Dean again. Normally, Dean would answer right away, but this time he wasn’t picking up. Next Castiel tried Sam’s phone, but he wasn’t answering either. Castiel knew they had moved on because they had told him they were heading to another job, but they hadn’t informed him as to which town they were going to. Because of the carvings, he couldn’t locate them anymore, so he called Bobby.

“Hello?” Bobby answered.

“I am relieved. I’ve been calling Sam and Dean, but neither of them has been answering.”

“Don’t tell him we’re here,” Castiel heard Dean say.

“God, you’re an idjit,” Bobby growled. “To clarify, Dean’s the idjit, not you or God.”

“Why does Dean not want me over?”

“It’s hard to explain. See, it’s Christmas-”

“Is that the human holiday where they celebrate Jesus’ six month birthday?”

“Yeah, but it’s about family and spending time with them. So, Dean had this stupid idea of celebrating it this year at my house. We have a tree and everything, but he wanted-”

“I am not a part of the family. I understand,” Castiel said trying not to let his hurt show.

“No, I take it back. You are an idjit. Cas, look here, Dean’s a good kid, but-”

“You do not need to comfort me, Bobby. Your event is a family affair. I will not be a bother.”

“No! Listen-!”

“You’re out of minutes,” the voice said.

“I do not like you, voice,” Castiel said into the phone. “I shall smite you one day.”

Castiel hung up and pocketed the phone. He stood for a few seconds on the side of the road where he usually waited for Dean before going to Bobby’s house. He knew he wasn’t invited, so he cloaked himself so they wouldn’t see him. A small part of Castiel hoped that they would change their minds and invite him to spend Christmas with them. Bobby was in the kitchen cooking while Sam was untangling lights. Dean was sitting on the floor wrapping presents. He sighed and looked at the gift he was wrapping.

“I have to be the suckiest gift wrapper ever.”

“Dude,” Sam said while trying to detangle strand of lights that had wrapped around his leg. “He’s going to be ripping it open anyway, why does it need to be perfect?”

“Because it does.”

“Whatever.”

Dean shook his head, “I still can’t believe Cas hung up on Bobby.”

“And whose fault is that?”

“What do you mean?”

“You should have been a little quieter about not wanting Cas around. You hurt him.”

“If he came that would have ruined everything!”

“I don’t care about your little surprise Christmas! This is a bad idea!”

“Cas has never celebrated Christmas before and everything has to be perfect, so stop playing with the lights and get ready.”

“Dean, I’m pretty sure these things are possessed and trying to kill me.”

Dean looked up to see Sam was twisted in the Christmas tree lights. Sam pouted and Dean went over to help him. Soon, Sam was free and the lights were ready to be put up.

“Dinner’s almost ready,” Bobby said. “You idjits ready to call the angel?”

Castiel revealed himself and Dean jumped. Sam tried to escape to give his brother and the angel some privacy, but the Christmas lights tripped him. Bobby helped Sam up. They left while Sam glared at the lights, challenging them to trip him again.

“So… uhh… Surprise?” Dean said uncertainly. “I- I know it’s not perfect and the tree is lopsided, I tried several god damn times to get it straight, but it won’t go straight. Then the lights are possessed and all our ornaments are chipped, I couldn’t find a single good one to put on the tree-”

“It’s alright,” Castiel said with a small smile. “It’s perfect to me.”

“Really?” Dean tried to fight the blush forming on his cheeks. “Well, that’s good, I guess.”

“I thought you didn’t want me to come… It hurt me.”

“Cas, I didn’t-”

“No, it was a misunderstanding, but I felt pain. It was strange.”

“Let me make it up to you, alright?”

Castiel nodded his head. Dean smiled then picked up the present he was wrapping off the floor. He handed it to Castiel, who turned it over in his hands. Warmth spread through Castiel like he had never felt before. He recognized the pattern from one of his Father’s creations called the zebra. Castiel smiled and went to pocket the gift, but Dean grabbed his wrist.

“What’s wrong?” Castiel asked confused.

“Aren’t you going to open it?”

“But you worked so hard wrapping the gift. I don’t want to ruin it.”

“It’s okay.” Dean watched Castiel open the gift. “You’ve given me so much. If you hadn’t rescued me from the Green Room, I’d probably be an angel condom right now.”

“I haven’t done much and I have done much that if you ever found out, you would hate me.”

“Cas, you could slaughter a whole town and I don’t think I’d hold it against you. When Ellen and Jo… I was sad. But, I kept thinking ‘Thank God it’s not Cas.’ I feel so damn guilty for thinking that, but it’s the truth. You are the one person I can’t lose.”

“Why?”

“You’re going to make me say it?”

“I don’t understand, Dean.”

“Open your gift and I’ll explain.”

“I have never received a personal gift before. We all receive our Father’s gift of life, but I never received an object specifically picked out for me.”

Castiel carefully placed the wrapping paper in his trench coat pocket and pulled out a small statue of an angel from the box the paper was entrapping. The statue was fat and pudgy with white feathery wings. It wore a tunic and was sitting on a cloud, but it had bright blue eyes and brown hair, much like the body Castiel was in possession of.

“It’s to remind you that you’ll always be an angel. No matter what happens, you’ll always have wings. It sounds sappy, but…”

“No, Dean, thank you. I only wish I had a present for you.”

“There is something. Cas, I love you. I never want to say good-bye to you, ever. So, never say good bye and we’ll count that as my gift.”

“I can’t give that to you, Dean. I would gladly say good-bye if it meant you could live on.”

“No, I can’t handle anymore good-byes. Please.”

Castiel pocketed his gift and stepped into Dean’s personal space. Dean recoiled. He tried to get away, but Castiel grabbed onto him. Castiel stared Dean in the eyes. The act made Dean nervous.

“You’re strong. That is why I love you.”

“I love you, too, Cas. Please, promise me you won’t leave.”

“I will promise I can stay as long as I can.”

Dean nodded, “I’ll take that.”

Castiel pressed his lips into Dean’s. Dean forgot about dinner and decorating the tree. He forgot about the chipped ornaments and possessed lights. He forgot about making this a perfect Christmas because it already was.
