Clark's only half-concentrating on where he's going as he enters the Nexus today, scribbling on a small notepad in his hand as he goes. He looks up and blinks, only mildly surprised to find himself here instead of at his desk at the Daily Planet.

"Deadlines... a fun challenge, or a rush to get everything done in time?"

No reason it can't be both.

"That's true," Clark agrees. "I know some people in the office love the pressure of being only an hour from printing."

Sounds like my Mom when things are rushed at the bakery. Joyous hysterical frantic panic of profit and success. She loves that kinda thing.

"Sounds familiar," he says with a nod. "It might get overwhelming for some people."

They can be useful against procrastination.

"Only because you have no other choice," Clark says with a smile.

For someone as... laid-back as I am, deadlines are sometimes a necessary goad to get me to do things that must be done that I don't particularly want to do.

"I used to have that problem sometimes. Not so much these days, but I work in a fast-paced job, so I can't afford to procrastinate."

Doc strides into the Nexus full of pride, ready to make an announcement -- and then he spots Clark. Ah, wonderful! Just the man he wanted to see! He grins at him. "I've never liked deadlines all that much myself. They have their uses, but I prefer having time to play around and be creative. However, now, time is not an issue for me."

"Good to see you, Doc," Clark says with a warm smile, pocketing his notebook and pen. "Let me guess... you taught Dee a new trick?"

"More like she taught us one," Doc chuckles. "We've finally achieved successful time travel! And properly reset the flow of time in our little pocket dimension while we were at it, apparently. We hit some resistance when we tried to go through time, and when we broke through -- well, according to Dee we managed to reset it to the proper flow of days and suchlike."

"Congratulations! That's pretty big news." Even if this version of Doc (and his Marty) aren't the same as the movies, it still seems like a major achievement. And while Clark frowns on time traveling for frivolous purposes, there are times when it's been vital to saving the world. So having the option is definitely a plus.

"Depends on your line of work and the importance of the project at hand. And also on how much enthusiasm you have for the project."

"That's true enough," Clark agrees. "Deadlines aren't as fun when there are lives on the line, but office work is rarely life-and-death."

"Most bosses at offices still act like it's life or death, though," he notes dryly, recalling the many board meetings he'd been in during his life. "Which can suck the fun out of anything."

Clark chuckles. "My editor can get like that sometimes. It's a fast-paced industry and we all knew what we were getting into when we signed up."
