[Translation] 24hourTV Part 28
It's been a long time since I've done translations, and I really these two segments so I decided to try my hand at translating them. I haven't had a chance to have this double checked yet, so please be aware there may be some errors.
24hourTV Part 28
So I started on this a few weeks ago, and then noticed Stormy Team had already made subs for this part (at least the first half, I haven't checked to see if they or anyone else did the whole thing). Oh well! I know not everyone is able to download their subs, and I'm sure there are differences in the translations. I enjoyed doing it so I figured there was no need to waste it :)

Nino: Okay, this time I went on location. I went to visit a girl that was supposed to be stillborn because of a serious disease and her older brother. Please watch. [VTR Starts] This is a letter written by a 10 year old boy about his beloved sister. "My little sister Ai-chan was born with an illness. Before Ai-chan was born, my Dad and Mom told me she was sick. Everyone said that Ai-chan would die shortly after being born. Even so, I alone believed that Ai-chan would come to see me in good spirits. Then Ai-chan was born in good spirits. I gave the newborn Ai-chan her first kiss." To meet these siblings, I went to Hokkaido. I think they seem like good siblings. When I see him, I want to ask what the brother is feeling...what the family is feeling.
Father: Hello!
Nino: Hello!
Mother: Hello, nice to meet you!
Nino: This is the family of the siblings. The father, the mother, and the brother who wrote the letter, Kanato-kun. Nice to meet all of you[1]. The girl Kanato-kun kissed was in a bed by the window.
Father: She's named "Aika," but everyone calls her "Ai-chan."
Nino: She responds better to "Ai-chan" then?
Father: That's right.
Kanato: Ai-chan. Heey. She's not reacting.
Nino: Is Ai-chan nervous today?
Kanato: Hmm...I think she definately is.
Nino: Ai-chan, who is about to turn four, was born with a severe brain disability. Ai-chan? Are you sleepy? After a short time, Ai-chan held onto my finger to greet me with a "Hello." Aika-chan was born in 2004. [Text: Born February 27, 2004] Ai-chan had a defect known as "Hydranencephaly"[2], which means that for some reason as a fetus, the cerebrum does not develop and cerebrospinal fluid builds up [in the brain cavity]. She can't move her body with her own will, or utter any words. Ai-chan's doctor has this to say about this defect.
Dr. Tachibana Yukiteru: Because the cerebrum is almost completely missing, I think in most cases [the patient] is in a state where they can't really live.
Nino: Even after being born, [he/she] could be lost right away...Even knowing this truth, Kanato believed that his sister would be born safely.
Mother: As soon as she was born, he looked at Ai-chan, not worried about the mess[3] or anything, and said "I'm finally able to meet you!" and kissed her unwashed face.
Nino: From then on, they say Kanato-kun didn't leave Ai-chan's side even for an instant.
Kanato: Ai-chan!
Nino: Even now, he snuggles up to Ai-chan and talks to her. Depending on her health, he sometimes takes her out for walks.
Mother: Even when she's really upset and in a bad mood, if Kanato talks to her and cuddles her, she cheers up. It makes me think "Ah, the bond between siblings is really strong after all."
Nino: Because of all of the love she's received from Kanato-kun, Ai-chan is able to see her 4th birthday this year. However, her parents' uneasiness hasn't dissapeared.
Mother: We were told she wouldn't live past a year, so for that first year we were really afraid, and even when she made it past a year we felt like we'd passed the limit, so we became afraid of when that day would come. Even now those thoughts are still stuck in my head.
Nino: Even though he doesn't say it, Kanato may be thinking the same thing. Kanato-kun, always thinking of his sister. I asked Kanato-kun about what was in his heart. Kanato-kun, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Kanato: A doctor.
Nino: A doctor?
Kanato: Because of Ai-chan's influence, I want to become a doctor.
Nino: For children like Ai-chan, and of course for Ai-chan herself, you're going to become a doctor?
Kanato: Yes.
Nino: That's amazing. To you, what kind of existance does Ai-chan have?
Kanato: She's a treasure. The most important.
Nino: Ai-chan is his most important treasure. Kanato-kun has thought of something to make Ai-chan happy. The present of a song. It's said that [people like] Ai-chan can't express emotion, but there are times when she reacts to sound with a smile.
Kanato: You finally smiled. [Back with Nino] I tried writing a poem in a notebook.
Nino: About Ai-chan? He wants to make Ai-chan happy by making a song for her. The notebook was full of Kanato's thoughts about Ai-chan. Is it okay for me to think about it while looking at this in Tokyo?
Kanato: Sure.
Nino: To make Ai-chan smile, we decided to hold a concert just for her. I returned to Tokyo right away and started writing a song using the poem containing Kanato-kun's thoughts about Ai-chan. Then one month later, to hold a small, small concert, I went to Hokkaido again with the finished song for Ai-chan.

Nino: Everyone who supported us worked on the song together. Um...I think it was really good. I think probably everyone will watch and think "What amazing siblings," but to Kanato it's really just something normal. That's why I guess...it really struck my heart, it got me right away.
Nakama Yukie: Yes...actually, today we have a letter from the older brother Kanato-kun for Ninomiya-san.
Nino: Oh my!

Tokumitsu Kazuo: "To Ninomiya-san, who I love. Thank you very much for making the really great song "Ai-chan no Uta." Thanks to Ninomiya-san, I was able to build a special memory. It's a special treasure to me and Ai-chan. Ai-chan and I will never forget it. If Ninomiya-san would remember the two of us, we'd be really happy. Please don't forget us." Nino: I think, um...he's a really amazing kid, he really...how should I say this...it was just me that went to visit him, but when I was leaving he would say "Here's some sweets, please share them with Arashi," he's a really grown up kid!
Various people: How grown up!
Nino: So I think that really comes from Ai-chan's influence.
Tokumitsu Kazuo: That's right. Okay, thank you Kanato-kun! Ai-chan, take care!

Ohno: Well I have - how many was it - 6 more. I'll make it!

Tokumitsu Kazuo: And now moving on, we arrive at Matsumoto-kun's trip abroad.
Jun: Yes, I went to Cambodia to see the state of chidren who have contracted HIV perinatally.
Tokumitsu Kazuo: HIV.

Narration: Right now Cambodia is facing a large problem - perinatal HIV transferal. Their reality is...
Jun: I'm Jun.
Narration: The Cambodian children Matsumoto Jun has come to visit are living as they fight with HIV. One of the young girls he met there contracted HIV because of her father, and held a grudge against him. The oath taken between that young girl and Matsumoto Jun was...

Narration: In July, Matsumoto Jun went to listen to an expert on HIV [6]. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Today in Japan, around 3 people contract HIV every day. And now in Cambodia...
Teacher: Perinatal transferal is a big problem.
Jun: "Perinatal Transferal" - children contract HIV from their mothers [in the womb]. What are those children thinking? What kind of lives do they lead? I wanted to see with my own eyes.
Narration: Then in August, Matsumoto-kun arrived in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.
Jun: Good morning. There's a ton of people.
Narration: Matsumoto-kun immediately set off for the home where the children with HIV live.
Jun: Ah...Nice to meet you.
Narration: The person that came to greet him was the caretaker for the children, Manii-san[7].
Manii: Do you like children?
Jun: I do. I like them but...I'm not used to them.
Narration: At this establishment, NGOs [Non-Government Organizations] take care of children who have lost their parents to AIDS, or who were born with HIV.

Jun: I'm nervous...Hello..
Narration: On the outside, they look healthy, but most of them contracted HIV at birth. "Perinatal Transferal" refers to the transferal of the virus that causes AIDS, HIV, from mother to child. These children have been fighting with HIV since before they were even old enough to understand it. Cambodia is said to be a breeding ground for HIV. There are numerous cases of fathers contracting HIV, then transferring it to their wives and [future] children. These children are in danger of losing their lives as HIV develops into AIDS. Wanting to talk to those children, Matsumoto-kun pulled out notes on Khmer.
Jun: I'm Jun.
Narration: Because these children have lost their parents to AIDS soon after being born, been discriminated against, or treated cruely, they don't easily open their hearts to strangers.
Jun: It didn't work. It was already really empty here.
Narration: When he gets close to them, the children move away. Matsumoto wondered how he should approach these children who's hearts have been scarred by HIV. But then it was lunch time.
Thaury: Would you like to eat with us?
Jun: Okay!
Narration: The one to invite him was a 15 year old girl, Thaury. She's said to be everyone's big sister. Thaury served up the traditional Cambodian meal for Jun. Everyone was on the edge of their seat watching Matsumoto-kun's reaction.
Jun: Mm. Mm. How do I say it, hold on a second. [In Khmer] It's delicious!
Narration: Thanks to Thaury, the distance between Matsumoto-kun and the children closed slightly.
Jun: How old are you?
Young girl: I'm 13.
Jun: These children who have contracted HIV from their beloved parents are emotionally scarred. At first, I didn't know how to approach them. I thought there was nothing to do but bond with them. Could that be me? I was happy. I finally got a reaction from the children. It's me.
Narration: This time, everyone's big sister Thaury invited Jun to play. Thanks to Thaury, everyone seemed to allow Matsumoto into their hearts. Even though these children have HIV, there are no restrictions on meals or exercise for them. They look completely healthy. Matsumoto-kun looks completely open. The children look like they're having a lot of fun too.
Jun: Hey wait-!
Narration: However, after this fun time, the reality of life with HIV appeared. 6:00pm - medicine time. This medicine helps prevent the progression of HIV into AIDS. Twice each day at a designated time, they must take this medicine.
Jun: He can swallow all that? He can swallow it?
Narration: To keep living, these children must take the medicine every day. Even the smallest children have to.
Jun: The happy expressions on the childrens' faces changed completely. They are alive because of the medicine. The fact that even the smallest children knew this shocked me. Red light...green light![8]
Narration: They look healthy, but they're fighting against HIV.
Jun: To truely understand these children, I wanted to learn more about HIV.
Narration: At a hospital, Matsumoto-kun saw the other reality of HIV.
[Text: Cambodia National Children's Hospital]
Narration: To understand Cambodia's perinatal HIV infection problem, Matsumoto-kun visited the National Children's Hospital. Her, perinatally infected children are hospitalized. In Cambodia, tests for HIV aren't particularly common. Instead, when the parents begin to notice symptoms, the children are already in danger.
Jun: Is it okay to touch him? Ah...he's cold. He's really wrinkled up, isn't he.
Narration: This child is 2 years old, but he only weighs 4kg, only 1/3 of the average for his age. Children with HIV do not grow well and have low immunity, so even a small health problem could be life threatening.
Jun: Wow...Even though they haven't committed a single sin, these children are born suffering. Their parents too. This is the reality of pernital HIV transferal. I was speechless.
Narration: Without medicine, these children cannot continue living. Even if they do not develop full blown AIDS, they experience a great deal of pain. This 9 year old girl lost her parents to AIDS. She was the one to discover that her parents had died. Also...
Young Girl: People will say "You'll give me HIV" and avoid me, or hit me.
Narration: She's experienced unfounded discrimination. There is a child who has suffered because she is too poor to go to the hospital, a child who had to stop going to school because of discrimination, a child whose parents died. Each of these smiling children have deep scars on their hearts. Even the happy Thaury has times when she begins to look lonely. Thaury learned that she had contracted HIV perinatally 4 years ago, when she was 11. Thaury, who was very shocked at the time, even now has times when she becomes full of uneasiness and goes off alone in her sadness.
Jun: When you found out you had HIV, how did you feel?
Thaury: I've seen people die 2 or 3 years after contracting HIV, so I thought "I don't want to contract it." When I learned that I had HIV, I became really sad, and I wanted to die. I drank poison to commit suicide, but I didn't die.
Narration: She cannot shake her many worries, such as how long will she be able to live in good health, or will she ever be able to get married.
Thaury: I though I contracted HIV because my father doesn't care about his children. Why would my father do something that could make him contract HIV? I really resented my father.
Jun: How does a father feel about transferring HIV to his daughter? Did he know about Thaury's feelings? I wanted to ask him about this.
Narration: Matsumoto-kun went with Thaury and her younger sister to speak with their parents. If Thaury returns home, she'll have to face the father she resents. She looks nervous.
Jun: We've arrived.
Narration: She only sees her father on New Years.
Jun: Is that your dad?
Narration: After this, when the father talks to his daughter...
Thaury: I really resented my father.
Narration: This is Thaury, who resents her father for giving her HIV.
Jun: Is that your dad?
Narration: What is this father, who transfered HIV to his daughter, feeling? Matsumoto went with her to visit him. Lately his health has been bad, but he looks happy to see his daughter.
Jun: Is that your mom? But...it looks like they're close, doesn't it? Hmm...
Narration: She only comes home on New Years. Her father's job is to play the Kokyuu at weddings. But now, because of HIV, he is unable to work. The mother has also suffered after contracting HIV from her husband.
Thaury's Mother: When I go to pump water, people say "Stay away!" and won't let me use the well. If my children go to visit friends, they are thrown out, if we even get near people they avoid us. We've experienced cruel discrimination.
Narration: HIV cannot be transferred by carrying out daily activities with a person with HIV, but because of the discrimination, she cannot find work to support her children.
Thaury's Father: I don't know when I contracted HIV, but I found out about it in 1994.
Narration: The father contracted HIV from another woman. Without knowing this, he passed HIV on to his wife and then his child.
Thaury's Father: It was the greatest sin I committed in my life. By the time I found out I had HIV, it was too late.
[Text: Regret]
Narration: To that day, he was deeply sorry for transferring HIV to his beloved family, but was unable to express those feelings to his wife or child. This is their first reunion in a long time, but Thaury remains stone-faced. She still holds onto mixed feelings about her father, after all. The father and daughter remained at odds with each other, neither able to share their feelings with the other, and only time passed between them. Then the time to return to the center drew near.
Jun: Do you have anything that you'd like to share with your daughter, now, before we go?
Thaury's Father: I'm sorry for everything that's happened. It happened while I still didn't know, so I hope you can somehow stop hating me. Do you hate me?
Jun: That's right...Thank you so much for your hospitality. Thank you very much.
Narration: How does Thaury feel about hearing her father's feelings for the first time?
Jun: How was it, talking to your father about your feelings?
Thaury: I feel a little better.
Jun: I see...you're glad it was able to be said, right?
Thaury: I'm glad I came to see him, thank you.
Jun: No [it's okay]. When we returned, Tauri was smiling. Maybe her heart felt a little less heavy.

Because of adults, children who have never commited a sin are suffering. I believe that is the truth of perinatal HIV transferal. Even so, Tauri and the others hold hope for tomorrow and live each day to the fullest. I feel that I have learned from the smiles of these children the importance of living to the fullest, of living with a purpose.
Tokumitsu Kazuo: [I can't hear the first part well, sorry] The look in the children's eyes, it's very soothing and kind, but so lonely!
Jun: Yes...I went to a lot of places - not just the places that were in this VTR - I went to a lot of places, and because of the thoughtlessness of adults, these children who haven't committed any sins were hurt, but even though it's not a problem that can just be solved right away by everyone trying to help, the children were still very cheerful, the way they shined left a big impression on me. So I think it made me rethink what it is that we can do for them.
Tokumitsu Kazuo: We heard from Matsumoto-san that Thaury-chan wants to become a doctor. Actually, we received a present from Cambodia for Matsumoto-san, who is celebrating his birthday on August 30th.
Jun: Eh?
Nakama Yukie: It was last night, wasn't it.

Notes:
1 - "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" - I'm sure most of you get the meaning of this phrase by now, but it doesn't have a good English translation. I just put in a standard English phrase that would be appropriate in the situation, but the original Japanese phrase basically implies that he's about to work with/hang out with these people, and he's asking for and thanking them for their cooperation/kindness.
2 - You can read about Hydranencephaly here. For those of you who's first language isn't English (or who just don't like science XD), this is what I understand about it: during gestation (when the baby is forming in the mother's body), the cerebrum (the part of the brain that controls a large amount of thinking/seeing/feeling/moving/etc) is damaged and doesn't develop. Instead, that area is filled with fluid.
3 - By "mess" she means all of the gross blood and fluids that are on babies when they first pop out.
4 - The word used here can either mean a fit as in a child throwing a fit, or a seizure. Seizures are fairly common in children with Hydranencephaly, so it's possible thats what he means here.
5 - I don't really know what pointed lips are either, but I checked with a professional translator on this and he didn't have any other ideas either ^^; I think the point of this whole section is just to say that she's angelic looking.
6 - For some of us who aren't Japanese, the fact that Jun has to go learn about HIV might seem kind of surprising, but sex education in general is pretty shitty in Japan - there are even members of the government there that swear Japanese people can't contract AIDS. So while he may have just been learning more about how HIV is transfered within the womb, this may have been as basic as "using condoms is good" XD
7 - I'm not familiar with Cambodian names, so unfortunately I can only use the Katakana spelling. If anyone reading this is Cambodian, please correct me! :)
8 - The Japanese game is called "Daruma-san ga koronda" (the daruma doll fell down), but it's played almost exactly like red light/green light.

Everyone said that Ai-chan would die shortly after being born. Even so, I alone believed that Ai-chan would come to see me in good spirits. Then Ai-chan was born in good spirits. I gave the newborn Ai-chan her first kiss." To meet these siblings, I went to Hokkaido. I think they seem like good siblings. When I see him, I want to ask what the brother is feeling...what the family is feeling.

Aika-chan was born in 2004. [Text: Born February 27, 2004] Ai-chan had a defect known as "Hydranencephaly"[2], which means that for some reason as a fetus, the cerebrum does not develop and cerebrospinal fluid builds up [in the brain cavity]. She can't move her body with her own will, or utter any words. Ai-chan's doctor has this to say about this defect.
Dr. Tachibana Yukiteru: Because the cerebrum is almost completely missing, I think in most cases [the patient] is in a state where they can't really live.
Nino: Even after being born, [he/she] could be lost right away...Even knowing this truth, Kanato believed that his sister would be born safely.
Mother: As soon as she was born, he looked at Ai-chan, not worried about the mess[3] or anything, and said "I'm finally able to meet you!" and kissed her unwashed face.
Nino: From then on, they say Kanato-kun didn't leave Ai-chan's side even for an instant.
Kanato: Ai-chan!

Nino: Even though he doesn't say it, Kanato may be thinking the same thing. Kanato-kun, always thinking of his sister. I asked Kanato-kun about what was in his heart. Kanato-kun, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Kanato: A doctor.
Nino: A doctor?
Kanato: Because of Ai-chan's influence, I want to become a doctor.
Nino: For children like Ai-chan, and of course for Ai-chan herself, you're going to become a doctor?

Nino: That's amazing. To you, what kind of existance does Ai-chan have?

Narration: In July, Matsumoto Jun went to listen to an expert on HIV [6]. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Today in Japan, around 3 people contract HIV every day. And now in Cambodia...
Teacher: Perinatal transferal is a big problem.
Jun: "Perinatal Transferal" - children contract HIV from their mothers [in the womb]. What are those children thinking? What kind of lives do they lead? I wanted to see with my own eyes.
Narration: Then in August, Matsumoto-kun arrived in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.
Jun: Good morning. There's a ton of people.
Narration: Matsumoto-kun immediately set off for the home where the children with HIV live.
Jun: Ah...Nice to meet you.
Narration: The person that came to greet him was the caretaker for the children, Manii-san[7].
Manii: Do you like children?
Jun: I do. I like them but...I'm not used to them.
Narration: At this establishment, NGOs [Non-Government Organizations] take care of children who have lost their parents to AIDS, or who were born with HIV.

Jun: I'm nervous...Hello..
Narration: On the outside, they look healthy, but most of them contracted HIV at birth. "Perinatal Transferal" refers to the transferal of the virus that causes AIDS, HIV, from mother to child. These children have been fighting with HIV since before they were even old enough to understand it. Cambodia is said to be a breeding ground for HIV. There are numerous cases of fathers contracting HIV, then transferring it to their wives and [future] children. These children are in danger of losing their lives as HIV develops into AIDS. Wanting to talk to those children, Matsumoto-kun pulled out notes on Khmer.
Jun: I'm Jun.
Narration: Because these children have lost their parents to AIDS soon after being born, been discriminated against, or treated cruely, they don't easily open their hearts to strangers.
Jun: It didn't work. It was already really empty here.
Narration: When he gets close to them, the children move away. Matsumoto wondered how he should approach these children who's hearts have been scarred by HIV. But then it was lunch time.
Thaury: Would you like to eat with us?
Jun: Okay!
Narration: The one to invite him was a 15 year old girl, Thaury. She's said to be everyone's big sister. Thaury served up the traditional Cambodian meal for Jun. Everyone was on the edge of their seat watching Matsumoto-kun's reaction.
Jun: Mm. Mm. How do I say it, hold on a second. [In Khmer] It's delicious!
Narration: Thanks to Thaury, the distance between Matsumoto-kun and the children closed slightly.
Jun: How old are you?
Young girl: I'm 13.
Jun: These children who have contracted HIV from their beloved parents are emotionally scarred. At first, I didn't know how to approach them. I thought there was nothing to do but bond with them. Could that be me? I was happy. I finally got a reaction from the children. It's me.
Narration: This time, everyone's big sister Thaury invited Jun to play. Thanks to Thaury, everyone seemed to allow Matsumoto into their hearts. Even though these children have HIV, there are no restrictions on meals or exercise for them. They look completely healthy. Matsumoto-kun looks completely open. The children look like they're having a lot of fun too.
Jun: Hey wait-!
Narration: However, after this fun time, the reality of life with HIV appeared. 6:00pm - medicine time. This medicine helps prevent the progression of HIV into AIDS. Twice each day at a designated time, they must take this medicine.
Jun: He can swallow all that? He can swallow it?
Narration: To keep living, these children must take the medicine every day. Even the smallest children have to.
Jun: The happy expressions on the childrens' faces changed completely. They are alive because of the medicine. The fact that even the smallest children knew this shocked me. Red light...green light![8]
Narration: They look healthy, but they're fighting against HIV.
Jun: To truely understand these children, I wanted to learn more about HIV.
Narration: At a hospital, Matsumoto-kun saw the other reality of HIV.
[Text: Cambodia National Children's Hospital]
Narration: To understand Cambodia's perinatal HIV infection problem, Matsumoto-kun visited the National Children's Hospital. Her, perinatally infected children are hospitalized. In Cambodia, tests for HIV aren't particularly common. Instead, when the parents begin to notice symptoms, the children are already in danger.
Jun: Is it okay to touch him? Ah...he's cold. He's really wrinkled up, isn't he.
Narration: This child is 2 years old, but he only weighs 4kg, only 1/3 of the average for his age. Children with HIV do not grow well and have low immunity, so even a small health problem could be life threatening.
Jun: Wow...Even though they haven't committed a single sin, these children are born suffering. Their parents too. This is the reality of pernital HIV transferal. I was speechless.
Narration: Without medicine, these children cannot continue living. Even if they do not develop full blown AIDS, they experience a great deal of pain. This 9 year old girl lost her parents to AIDS. She was the one to discover that her parents had died. Also...
Young Girl: People will say "You'll give me HIV" and avoid me, or hit me.
Narration: She's experienced unfounded discrimination. There is a child who has suffered because she is too poor to go to the hospital, a child who had to stop going to school because of discrimination, a child whose parents died. Each of these smiling children have deep scars on their hearts. Even the happy Thaury has times when she begins to look lonely. Thaury learned that she had contracted HIV perinatally 4 years ago, when she was 11. Thaury, who was very shocked at the time, even now has times when she becomes full of uneasiness and goes off alone in her sadness.
Jun: When you found out you had HIV, how did you feel?
Thaury: I've seen people die 2 or 3 years after contracting HIV, so I thought "I don't want to contract it." When I learned that I had HIV, I became really sad, and I wanted to die. I drank poison to commit suicide, but I didn't die.
Narration: She cannot shake her many worries, such as how long will she be able to live in good health, or will she ever be able to get married.
Thaury: I though I contracted HIV because my father doesn't care about his children. Why would my father do something that could make him contract HIV? I really resented my father.
Jun: How does a father feel about transferring HIV to his daughter? Did he know about Thaury's feelings? I wanted to ask him about this.
Narration: Matsumoto-kun went with Thaury and her younger sister to speak with their parents. If Thaury returns home, she'll have to face the father she resents. She looks nervous.
Jun: We've arrived.
Narration: She only sees her father on New Years.
Jun: Is that your dad?
Narration: After this, when the father talks to his daughter...
Thaury: I really resented my father.
Narration: This is Thaury, who resents her father for giving her HIV.
Jun: Is that your dad?
Narration: What is this father, who transfered HIV to his daughter, feeling? Matsumoto went with her to visit him. Lately his health has been bad, but he looks happy to see his daughter.

Narration: She only comes home on New Years. Her father's job is to play the Kokyuu at weddings. But now, because of HIV, he is unable to work. The mother has also suffered after contracting HIV from her husband.
Thaury's Mother: When I go to pump water, people say "Stay away!" and won't let me use the well. If my children go to visit friends, they are thrown out, if we even get near people they avoid us. We've experienced cruel discrimination.
Narration: HIV cannot be transferred by carrying out daily activities with a person with HIV, but because of the discrimination, she cannot find work to support her children.
Thaury's Father: I don't know when I contracted HIV, but I found out about it in 1994.
Narration: The father contracted HIV from another woman. Without knowing this, he passed HIV on to his wife and then his child.
Thaury's Father: It was the greatest sin I committed in my life. By the time I found out I had HIV, it was too late.
[Text: Regret]
Narration: To that day, he was deeply sorry for transferring HIV to his beloved family, but was unable to express those feelings to his wife or child. This is their first reunion in a long time, but Thaury remains stone-faced. She still holds onto mixed feelings about her father, after all. The father and daughter remained at odds with each other, neither able to share their feelings with the other, and only time passed between them. Then the time to return to the center drew near.
Jun: Do you have anything that you'd like to share with your daughter, now, before we go?
Thaury's Father: I'm sorry for everything that's happened. It happened while I still didn't know, so I hope you can somehow stop hating me. Do you hate me?
Jun: That's right...Thank you so much for your hospitality. Thank you very much.
Narration: How does Thaury feel about hearing her father's feelings for the first time?
Jun: How was it, talking to your father about your feelings?
Thaury: I feel a little better.

Tokumitsu Kazuo: [I can't hear the first part well, sorry] The look in the children's eyes, it's very soothing and kind, but so lonely!
Jun: Yes...I went to a lot of places - not just the places that were in this VTR - I went to a lot of places, and because of the thoughtlessness of adults, these children who haven't committed any sins were hurt, but even though it's not a problem that can just be solved right away by everyone trying to help, the children were still very cheerful, the way they shined left a big impression on me. So I think it made me rethink what it is that we can do for them.
Tokumitsu Kazuo: We heard from Matsumoto-san that Thaury-chan wants to become a doctor. Actually, we received a present from Cambodia for Matsumoto-san, who is celebrating his birthday on August 30th.
Jun: Eh?
Nakama Yukie: It was last night, wasn't it.

Notes:
1 - "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" - I'm sure most of you get the meaning of this phrase by now, but it doesn't have a good English translation. I just put in a standard English phrase that would be appropriate in the situation, but the original Japanese phrase basically implies that he's about to work with/hang out with these people, and he's asking for and thanking them for their cooperation/kindness.
2 - You can read about Hydranencephaly here. For those of you who's first language isn't English (or who just don't like science XD), this is what I understand about it: during gestation (when the baby is forming in the mother's body), the cerebrum (the part of the brain that controls a large amount of thinking/seeing/feeling/moving/etc) is damaged and doesn't develop. Instead, that area is filled with fluid.
3 - By "mess" she means all of the gross blood and fluids that are on babies when they first pop out.
4 - The word used here can either mean a fit as in a child throwing a fit, or a seizure. Seizures are fairly common in children with Hydranencephaly, so it's possible thats what he means here.
5 - I don't really know what pointed lips are either, but I checked with a professional translator on this and he didn't have any other ideas either ^^; I think the point of this whole section is just to say that she's angelic looking.
6 - For some of us who aren't Japanese, the fact that Jun has to go learn about HIV might seem kind of surprising, but sex education in general is pretty shitty in Japan - there are even members of the government there that swear Japanese people can't contract AIDS. So while he may have just been learning more about how HIV is transfered within the womb, this may have been as basic as "using condoms is good" XD
7 - I'm not familiar with Cambodian names, so unfortunately I can only use the Katakana spelling. If anyone reading this is Cambodian, please correct me! :)
8 - The Japanese game is called "Daruma-san ga koronda" (the daruma doll fell down), but it's played almost exactly like red light/green light.
