The shelter did end up taking the cats from the Meriden hoarder. It wasn't fifty, it was sixty-seven. I don't know if anyone here can picture that many cats, so let's just say it's a shitload. It turns out that the house they were taken from wasn't a house either, but a two-bedroom apartment.
They were all in dog crates in the front of the isolation room. All the animals that were already in here had to be moved out to make room for them, so they were moved back into iso proper. We didn't have enough crates for all the cats, so most are sharing with three or four other cats.
All of them are sick, mostly with upper respiratory infections.
Ashley, two volunteers from Channel 3 News, and I went through and cleaned each cat's eyes and nose, then put eye medication and nose medication in. This kitten's eye was crusted shut, and with only a little wiping with a damp towel pus exploded out of it. The poor thing must have been in terrible pain from the pressure.
Most of the cats fell asleep immediately in the crates. I think they're relieved to have a clean place to sleep, honestly. The pictures from the house are the most disgusting things I've ever seen.
With some TLC and lots of medication, I think these will turn out to be beautiful animals.
This orange kitten was gorgeous.
There were seven kittens in this cage, and there's another cage of seven kittens.
At least three cats were pregnant, but there's probably more that just aren't far enough along to tell.
We had to put on the blue surgical gowns to handle the cats, because the upper respiratory infections pass very easily from cat to cat.
This kitten is one of the sickest. Its mouth was just full of snot when I got to it.
We still have lots of our other kittens around, including this guy. Donna the cop, who takes our goats usually, has a friend who wants this one.
We got two ferrets in that live in the lobby now.
These cats are tiny, but are in the main room because we ran out of cages.
This dalmation puppy is going to live at the fire department.
We have way too many black cats right now. People tend not to like black cats much.
This is Jessie. She's a sweetheart and has the cutest little black puppy.
Hel enjoyed her dinner.
Flower is back in the main room, where she'll probably become a shelf cat.
Josie hung out on top of Hel's cage.
Clovis, the cat that got kicked in the face, just wants to sit on your lap and purr.
Here's the bit where I ask a favor. If anyone local (or anyone who isn't local that wouldn't mind mailing things) has any old linens, towels, sheets, blankets, that they don't need anymore the shelter desperately needs them. We've already run out of things to give these cats to sleep on and we can't do laundry fast enough.
Other things we need are:
-Purina Cat Chow (blue bag)
-Purina Kitten Chow (yellow bag)
-LITTER BOXES
-WATER/FOOD BOWLS
-Yesterday's News cat litter/Feline Pine cat litter
-IAMS dry dog food
-wire dog crates
-exam gloves
If you're local you can either drop things off at the shelter (311 Murdock Ave in Meriden, off Research Parkway) or at my house. If you're not local you can mail supplies to:
Meriden Humane Society
311 Murdock Ave.
Meriden, CT 06450
Or you can send them to me to bring in at:
Hannah Gregory
92 Patton Drive
Cheshire, CT 06410
All of these new cats need extensive vet care which will be extremely costly. If you can donate even a few dollars it would be appreciated so much. The shelter unfortunately doesn't have a Paypal account, but if you send money to my Paypal (distantimage@hotmail.com) I promise that it will go to the shelter.
I usually wouldn't ask for help with this sort of thing, but we are honestly desperate. I'm terrified that the shelter will close over something like this and of what will happen to our 200+ animals if that happens.
You can visit the Meriden Humane Society online here. The animals listed there aren't even close to all the animals we have available, so if anyone is interested in adopting you should come down to see us.
ETA: Since I'm seeing this post linked a few places (and THANK YOU to those linking), could anyone who is sending something please just drop a comment here? I want to warn the managers that packages are coming their way.

Here's an article about the hoarder from NBC. Now a better article!
