It's been several months (hell, almost a whole friggin year!) since I last posted anything on LJ. My last post was of my miserable failure of a project for attempting to make a DeathNote Game using Ruby / GameMaker 6... things got in the way, I ended up getting completely sidetracked from the project due to college steadily growing in workload, and the stupid mistake of attempting to take on 90% of the project on my own...
That being said... I give to you:
~~~~~DeathNote-Online~~~~~
I have come up with a plan to attempt to somehow create a browser-based RPG style game based solely around Death Note! There's just one thing missing: The concept! And that's where all of you come in! I want to involve this ENTIRE community in this project as a complete collaboration of our skills, knowledge and designs.
Now, you're probably wondering: "How the hell could DeathNote be turned into an MMORPG?" well that's where a little improv comes in.
I was thinking that users start out as some of the police force on the Kira case, and slowly work their way up to higher ranks by solving puzzles and cracking cases related to Kira. And every now and then, as a special event, we could add a major break in the case, given to them by none other than L himself, though as the silhouette for lower levels, then as Ryuuzaki for mid levels, and finally as Near for higher levels (post-L storyline).
-OR-
Somehow have Kira supporters and L (and friends) Supporters... though i haven't quite found a way to make this one as entertaining for an MMORPG yet...
Anyway, I'm in the process of setting up a Forum for this project, which i have obviously deemed "DeathNote-Online" (though the name is still pending further thought and suggestion).
Project outline:
-Programming Languages-
Project will be based in PHP / MySQL / HTML / Javascript / XML formats. Any help from web-programmers with basic HTML, Javascript and PHP languages would be greatly appreciated once we get this project under way, as this WILL take a good length of time to complete to the point of Alpha / Beta testing, but if everyone is willing to participate as much as they can, this should be no problem.
-Images and Hosting-
I am still debating how image-intense this should be, seeing as most free web-based providers have limited bandwidth and space, though I may have found a decent free domain service which may even include our very own domain name (ex: www.DeathNote-Online.com) as well as a high-end connection speed (possibly 1Gbps down). The only problem is, the provider wants to see a demonstration of the project before they are willing to commit, which is understandable.
-Story Line / Events-
This is where we will need the most amount of help. Before we can proceed with any of the programming or imagery, we need to have some kind of outline / story that each player is to follow.
-Forum / Message Board-
Once i have the message board up and configured, everyone can sign up for it... that way we will have a way of keeping (better) track of this project. plus the board allows specific tracking of posts! (that way you aren't flooded by EVERY single post that goes into the forum, leaving you to sort them out yourself =P)
Anyway, I will be checking back on this post for comments / suggestions / ideas and such later on tonight and for the next couple of days (until i get the board up and running efficiently), at which point i will make a final post about the project (other than updates) here in LJ, as well as copying all related material from here into the forums (with respected references to users who posted the ideas).
I hope to hear from you all soon, and am very eager to see what we can come up with (that is, if you all like this idea =P)
Ciao!
