I wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the idea of painting on ivory; I knew about it from the Jane Austen quote where she is being modest about her writing by comparing it to ivory miniature painting, calling it "The little bit (two inches wide) of ivory on which I work with so fine a brush as produces little effect after much labour." At the moment, I'm obsessing slightly over historic methods of textile decoration. Blackwork is very interesting to me because it's an example of embroidery that we only really know about because it was so well documented in paintings, especially those of Holbein.
