I have a funny relationship with the accent, and am surprised by how happy it has made me to have an australian co-worker for the last six weeks. Hearing him say 'antibiotics' and 'vitamins' fills me with love. And yet I still feel that self-loathing glimmer of satisfaction when people are surprised to hear I'm not local.
I know exactly what you mean. The new woman at our estate agents' is from the Blue Mountains: I know this because when I first clocked her accent and eagerly asked her 'where're you from, then?', she gave me the guarded look I've given to so many other people, and said 'Australia' in that 'want-to-make-something-out-of-it?' tone I've heard in my own voice so many times. Of course, she warmed up when I explained where I was from, but yeah. First time I'd passed to one of my own without trying: a very weird feeling.
(Also: I may or may not have had an amiable squabble with one of my housemates the other day about the correct pronunciation of 'vitamins': dammit, it's not spelled with a double 't', and the Latin word for 'life' is not pronounced 'vitter'!).
I am now going to devote myself to hunting down footage of Nick Cave in pink PVC trousers with all the ferocity formerly devoted to my DPhil. Yes.
It really is just a lovely song. I was obsessed with it in Year 12, for some reason that now completely escapes me, and had to be forcibly restrained by my co-director from putting it into the Drama play I was directing at the time :D
Just came over here from TLL after commenting on your post. As it happens, I am also a Nick Cave fan. Do you mind if I friend you? Though I don't post that often I'm afraid.
