Get Tohma to Otakon!

Jul 06, 2008 22:06

Ok, here's the deal for anyone who doesn't already know. Tohma has just been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and will be going through chemotherapy for probably the next year or so. She's going to be too sick to work for a long time and because she doesn't have insurance she's trying to get Medicaid and disability to help pay the huge bills for ( Read more... )

I don't want to be a downer, because I do think a con would cheer her up, but I am worried that a con could a be a really bad place for her to be, since she usually comes back from cons with some sort of cold/flu/etc. and chemotherapy is immunosuppressant (especially since it's lymphoma and so her immune system is already compromised).

I've talked to several people, one of which is a nurse and the others have nurses for mothers and everyone has said if she wants to go she should go. Having cancer is very isolating and it's easy to get depressed. The people I talked to thought going was a great idea and that she needs to be encouraged to be out and active and do things that she enjoys. Katrin was actually very adament that she should go to the con when I wasn't sure if it would be the best thing for her because of the whole immunosuppressant thing with the chemo.

I hope that helps.

I don't know if this helps, or even if it's on the same route, but Kat and I were planning on taking the train from Staunton to D.C. the Wednesday before the con. If you wanted to get Tohma to your house with a little time to rest before leaving for Maryland, AND have someone there to keep her company at least a little ways (that assumes it's the same train) you could see if you could get her on that train. Having never ridden one except in Japan, I don't know how these things work. ^^;

I already sent some money to Jen to give to Tohma just in general, so what I can donate to this is really small, but every little bit helps, ne? Hope this works out!! ^_^

Unfortunatly that isn't the same route or I would definatly do that. You'll like the train though. They are very fun.

Thank you for anything you can contribute. Everything does help!

When do you need it by? I'm strapped right now because I just paid the rent but I usually have a little extra in my mid-month paycheck.

If ya'll are buying her ticket why not buy her a bunk in the sleeper car? Bed on a train. even better than a van, perhaps.
