I'm still kind of shocked it lasted as long as it did. The NFL can afford these kinds of shenanigans because at the end of the day football is still far and away the most popular spectator sport in the US, but the other American leagues need to keep it together for their own sake (particularly the NHL if it's serious about expanding hockey's appeal in the US). Kind of bummed it wasn't resolved in time for me to see a Caps game, but then again, those tickets are probably outside my broke grad student budget, lol.
I agree with everything you are saying, but our commissioner (along with a handful of owners who are on the board of Governors negotiation committee) is an asshole, who thinks that using a lockout as a negotiation tactic is THE BEST IDEA EVER! There are already bets on how long it takes for the General Managers to start exploiting loopholes in the new CBA that will guarantee that we get another lockout in 10 years when this CBA expires.
We need a commissioner whose primary objective is the preservation of The Game, and not to just serve the Board of Governors greedy little agenda. Also, someone not associated with the Proskauer law firm (represents all major sports leagues in their lockouts the last few years) would be nice.
And we have, at the very least, 8 years (10 yr CBA with 8 year option) of labour peace to look forward to.
Doesn't look to be any out of conference games, so I won't get to see Teemu or Koivu play one last time, but there will be games and TV will just have to do. Now my TV is actually good for something!
My entire city just woke up from the post-New Years blahs. \o/
Also, I don't expect to be posting often at first, and in fact I wasn't going to start until February since I have lots of RL crap to get done this month and anything that takes me away form that should be limited, but I JUST HAD TO POST ABOUT THIS!!!! However, I believe I've figured out what this journal will be going forward and the function it will serve, so it WILL be used!
Everyone is saying "If the Habs can just stay healthy they can definitely make the playoffs this year", and my response is that they should have stopped after the word "healthy", paused for dramatic effect and then just laughed and laughed...
