Wow. This is an awesome and painful fill to that prompt. ♥

Because after Finnick, she knew nobody was going to have the chance to get to her again, to let them see something real. It would hurt too fucking much when they didn’t like what they saw and moved on. So fucking was all she had left to her to feel something, being everything they wanted and using them even as they thought they used her, and having the satisfaction of knowing not a one of them had gotten anything real or true from her.

Finnick would be appalled to know that he had any part in hurting her like this, the poor, clueless man, even as he'd probably understand it (and Annie certainly would) if he stepped back and looked at it rationally.

He didn’t tease or snark at her. Right now both of them took this seriously enough to leave the sarcasm with the clothes.

I love this. Just a subtle acknowledgement that the sarcasm is a bit of armor they both put on when they need it to protect themselves.

Beautiful fic, my friend.

I can't write fluff in THG. Apparently. Ever. :P

(Since obviously in his case, Chantilly was very up-front about it ( ... )

But you get two scared, traumatized teenagers together and they come to rely on each other with a close friendship with a sexual aspect to it...the difference is that Finnick managed to find something real and see the difference.

In Jo's defense, it must have been almost impossible not to fall in love with Finnick in that situation. I mean, he's a sweet, caring guy and obviously feeling attracted to her. What else could you ask for? Finnick had other options available, while she was on her own.

Oh, totally agreed and that's my read on it too. She's essentially alone. Her family was murdered, and of the two other living Seven victors, Cedrus is polite but gruff plus he's forty years older than her and Blight is twenty years older and can't deal well with the Games and the prostitution and so he's somewhat unreliable. Haymitch is reliable for advice but in terms of direct comfort he's making sure to keep her at an emotional distance because a.) he doesn't want to be that asshole who takes advantage of a vulnerable teen girl and b.) he really just doesn't want anything close enough to hurt anyway. She's lost what friends she had because they don't know what to make of her post-arena. So someone kind and understanding like Finnick who's there for her 100% as a friend and a lover? It's natural to fall in love with him ( ... )

Somehow I'm finding those two more comforting than any happy sex without issue could ever be. I could read about them fumbling through intimacy together all day.

It's rather ironic how Jo is noticing all those little hints about how Haymitch's trust in and love for her is growing, but not recognizing them for what they are. Of course, she's not noticing how she's feeling about him either, so there's that.

And admittedly, "We're gonna be dead soon anyway" is a good reason to not overthink these things, as fatalist as it may be.

Somehow it's a hell of a lot easier for me to write that than happy, normal, easy sex would be. Because with the latter I'd be hard-pressed to find the emotional hook for it. It's two people in love who have a good sex life together and that's great and no reason to be uptight or prudish about it, but I just really don't have all that much to say about it beyond "Yep, they typically have very good sex together." It's when the sex isn't perfect, or when it's sex that's addressing some underlying issue, that I have a framework to hang that scene on.

Yeah, I get that with the happy sex. It's nice but, nothing to see, moving on, right? And anyway, people improving their sex life makes me happy. People who act like in a porn movie just make me jealous. ;)

True enough, and maybe understandable in her case where she's never had anyone actually reciprocate her love

Yes, particularly considering how she's usually considered the Dom bitch in the Capitol, on top of it. But probably good that neither of them got it at first because otherwise they might have panicked and stopped doing it with each other. ;)

Also, since I didn't explicitly state it before let me say now that I enjoyed the fic a lot, obviously. It's a great and subtle bit of writing.

LOL. It's one of those things that you can just acknowledge and move on from. Like puppies. Everybody likes cute puppies (more or less) but saying "OMG ADORABLE PUPPY" is enough. Don't need to go on about it.

Situations where every single sex act is insanely hot, multiorgasmic, and nobody ever says or does anything wrong or even less than perfect make me suspicious. ;)

Yeah, there's that, and of course, the one person who she really opened up to, i.e., Finnick, still didn't love her romantically in the end, so that's made her kind of close off even more. Not that they're not BFFs or that she's holding back on him now, but it's made her more romantically cautious.

Probably so. "OH SHIT hit the panic button." XD

YES BUT IT'S JUST SO SAD THAT THEY USED TO BE LIKE THIS

THEY COULDN'T EVEN SNARK WITH EACH OTHER BACK THEN

TRUE.

But it means all the more that they stuck it out through the awkwardness and now they can snark at each other, in and out of bed? :D
