Watching Jared…
Jensen’s new favorite pastime is watching Jared. He’s gorgeous, always willing to smile and reach out to touch Jensen. Jared’s a tactile kind of guy and until they got together Jensen could hardly stand to have people touch him. But now he thrives on it, thrives on Jared’s open affection.
He loves to watch Jared when he sleeps, sometimes purposefully waking earlier to catch the last ten minutes of Jared’s sleep-relaxed features. His boyfriend always wakes with mussed hair, sleepy eyes and a gentle smile when he feels Jensen’s lips on his neck or cheek, and Jensen’s never seen him more beautiful.
Two days later, he changes his mind when they walk into the vet’s to pick up some special dog food (only the best for Jared’s babies). A lady has just brought in a small black and white puppy that she found whimpering in a gas station bathroom. Jared’s smile falls as he listens and his hand clenches harder around Jensen’s. Jensen knows Jared wants to touch, to reach out and comfort the unhappy ball of fluff, so he slowly pulls his hand from Jared’s letting him know it’s okay. Hugging the wriggling pup to his chest, Jared coos and whispers nonsense until it settles into an exhausted slumber. Jensen knows he’s wearing the same love-struck expression as the lady and the vet’s receptionist as they watch Jared smile contently at the dog. When Jared turns pleading eyes on Jensen, he’s nodding before the question leaves Jared’s lips.
Two weeks later, when they’re introducing their new puppy to the leash Jensen had insisted the dog needed, Jared is whispering and petting the dog as Jensen stands by. Jared’s taken to carrying the dog everywhere after she started whimpering when Sadie and Harley got a little too boisterous.
“Yes Jared, you need to teach her to walk on the leash,” Jensen says patiently as he waits for Jared to offer a reason why Kimba isn’t ready for this step yet.
While he’s watching Jared, a little girl edges closer to them, watching the puppy intently. She speaks to Jared softly and points to the puppy with wide eyes and a curious but worried smile. Her mother comes over to watch and speaks to Jensen quietly while Jared lets the little girl tentatively touch the puppy’s head and shows her how to introduce herself to a strange dog. The mother tells Jensen how the little girl saw her younger brother get attacked by two dogs and she’s been terrified of dogs ever since. By the time they walk away, the girl has stroked, petted and held the puppy, giggling and smiling the whole way through it. Jared watches the girl walk away, happy to have helped another person come to love dogs. His dimples are showing and he laughs softly as Kimba licks just under his chin. Jensen doesn’t think he could love Jared anymore than he does right now.
Two months later, when Jensen is watching Jared through the kitchen window, he listens to the laughter and the playful barking of the three dogs with a fond smile. He hears Jared telling the dogs that their daddies love them; not their daddy, their daddies, and Jensen feels like his heart nearly beats out of his chest. He doesn’t know how he managed before he had Jared in his life. He knows one thing for sure; he never wants to find out.
Two years later, Jensen watches as Jared plays in the yard with Jensen’s nephews; then he watches as Jared speaks patiently to their elderly grandparents before sitting down to enjoy a beer with their fathers and brothers; and finally as Jared charms their mothers and sisters with easy smiles and flirtatious comments. Jensen stands at the back door of their house and reaches down to pat Kimba who has come to stand beside him. He smiles as the dog watches Jared too; sometimes he thinks she loves him as much as Jensen does. After all, Jared rescued them both with his generous heart full of love.
Two years and two days later, Jensen watches Jared take wet clothes out of the washing machine as he hums softly to himself. He stands still for a moment before he realizes the song Jared is humming is something Jensen wrote for him early on in their relationship. Jensen never would have thought that Jared would have remembered the song or known it well enough to hum the tune perfectly. It’s at that moment, when Jared is the most beautiful that he’s ever been, that Jensen decides he wants this man to be his husband. To have and to hold, now and forever till the day they are parted by death.
Two years and two weeks later, Jensen watches Jared stare at their kitchen in amazement. There are two places set at the table, two beers waiting to be opened, and he knows Jared can probably smell the steaks grilling outside. All three dogs are clean and have been groomed, and Kimba has a cute new collar. Jensen is forced into silence by nerves throughout nearly the whole meal. When they move to the patio later to sit comfortably and watch the dogs play, Jensen turns to watch Jared, a small smile on his face until Jared’s eyes find his. They lean across and kiss gently before Jensen calls Kimba up to sit between them. Watching as she lays her paw on Jared’s knee, Jensen’s smile gets wider as Jared reads the writing on the collar.
Will you marry me?
Two years, two weeks and two hours later, Jensen catches Jared watching him. He lifts his head from Jared’s shoulder and smiles happily at his fiancé.
“I know you watch me, I like it,” Jared whispers to Jensen. “It makes me feel loved and safe.”
“I’m gonna spend the rest of my life watching you,” Jensen murmurs as he runs his thumb over the ring resting on Jared’s finger. Kimba barks as they kiss before running off to play with her brother and sister.
