We're going to try this out and see how well it works. This will be an open thread to discuss this week's debates. The only rule is don't debate any of the specific topics here, as framed within the debates. For example, you can discuss immigration, but don't get into the specific points brought up by myself or fireuzer. As for the debates that ( Read more... )

My personal favourite is that you started off with this:

However, when large numbers of Canadian health professionals flee to the US to escape the horrors of the Canadian state-run healthcare scheme, we welcome them with open arms. This really has little do with my argument, but I wanted to start out by busting the balls of our new Canadian council member, and try to alienate him right off the bat.

and then went on to say this:

You display an attitude of cultural and national superiority that has no place in rational debate.

Of course there's an exception where Canadians are involved. :P

What if you screened comments then unscreened them after the debates?

I know that wouldn't exactly create much disscussion but it could be like a predict the outcome and then everyone could see who was closets after.

I dunno, just rambling.

We'll see how this goes first, and then maybe try something like that next week. This entire first season is going to be experimental.

Got to see several interesting debating styles - from lovecrafty's impressive and intimidating citation filled opening salvo to the sicilian's bait and wait to be strong on the rebuttal. They'res certainly some interesting styles abound. I was most perplexed by my own opponants one line arguement. I'm dying to see what their strategy is: if it's a bait and wait or if they felt the one line was strong enough to stand on its own.

And man, did Colintj get stumped or what? Man he seemed flustered.
And does anyone have guesses on how hard Lance is gonna hit back against lovecrafty?

Well, arguably the topic that was chosen is something the major media isn't covering too heavily - and what of it is heavily slanted. Most of what I've seen on the topic comes from conspiracy theory sites, which is hardly the place to begin when constructing a sound, logical argument...

He may need a day or two to collect facts and form an opinion.

Lordy:

We should designate this "The Lounge". Idle banter and "The Lounge" go hand in hand.

I love how we previously had trouble getting enough people and topics for one debate a week, and now we have 8 going, which appear to be pretty successful. The irony.

well this system has introduced the necessity of personal responsibility into the structure. If we do not debate, the debate flounders or dies and we become the ones criticized for it with a loss. It seems pretty cool now - lets see if everyone keeps up with it by week 4.
