Well it took until about Week 3 before things started going to shit, which is better than I expected ( Read more... )

You got a break now. :P

Seriously, I could go for maybe a two week rotation instead of everyone debating every week. I don't like having to forfeit a debate just to get a break, but, seriously, fuck health care.

Just FYI, it may take me some time to get my opening arguments up. I'm still considering how to frame it and which side to take. But I will have it up today.

As for complaints, complaining about being in a tough position is weak, and conceding is weak. Week 1, I had to argue against public healthcare. Not my personal opinion, but I did it. Luckily, I was able to tweak things a little bit. Last week, well, you saw it. The outcome was not really in question from the moment the topic was known. But if I was just going to concede because I was ill-informed, what the fuck am I doing here? Hell, I might as well concede this week as well, since my knowledge of Iran/North Korea probably does not match up to yours. But I won't.

That's fine. Iran/North Korea is probably the most wide open topic on the list, and there are any number of ways you can frame it.

I think you're overestimating me. I almost lost to fireuzer, for christ's sake...

I thought so. I had to put some serious effort into stalling until I could come up with a liberal appealing argument for the death penalty. Then your dumb ass voted against me and almost fucked everything up. I've never argued the death penalty beyond. "kill the fuckers"

colintj and I have discussed our debate, so it will be played out, hopefully soon.

Sorry about fireuzer and I. The real reason I waited so long is that I've been really busy. Which is also why my debates have gone to shit.

I don't mind a late judgement now and then. People have better things to do than devote their time to a livejournal community. I'm more concerned about debates being judged on something other than the content of the debate, especially when they're being based on the votes of other council members.

the reason was because killtac debated better

that was what i had IMed you about immediately before posting, whether or not i had to give a legitamte reason for my decision, or if i could joke about why

Oh, I think that the POINT of debating is that sometimes you have to creatively debate positions you aren't comfortable with. Sometimes there are indefensible positions, or sides that are easier to defend than others, but last week's capitalism vs. socialism debate ended 3-2, which makes it hardly indefensible. You don't have to believe something with all your heart in order to argue for that side. I mean, if you did, lots of lawyers would be SOL. The advantage of the home team is that they can decide what side to take - and usually it is the side they believe in/are more comfortable with. Since we each get to be the home team half the time, we can all choose the side half the time, and the rest of the time it's a toss up as to what you get to argue.

Is this about my concession this week? Saying "I agree, have a nice week" is my way of saying "I need a break this week." For your information, I didn't believe in the position I took last week or the week before that, and I think I did a good job both weeks, even though I lost 2-3 each time.

I agree. But I think you might be able to postpone the debate. If you want to concede, though, go ahead. It wasn't solely about you either - it was also about lovecrafty who thinks his position is indefensible, and just a general comment.

Openings,
two echanges,
closings,

if one wants more verbage they can harass judges for permission.

We'll see how the next couple of weeks go. If we're having to read a novel every week, I'll consider comment limits.

Sissy.

And it was a Novella, not a novel - that would have required another 36,000 wds. ;)>
