The afterlife, does it exist?!

Jun 01, 2005 22:51

Hello community!! This is my first debate post, it's going to be on the topic of "the afterlife". This post is going to be in a bit of a different format than Olpluvr would use, I cannot provide links that give proof to if the afterlife actually exists, nobody can proof that. What I am going to provide are aspects of this topic to discuss, and you as the ( Read more... )

Well I'm sure that my personal beliefs will make very clear my atheist stand point and that as such they will all be quite linear and rather single minded, but it is none-the-less what I believe ( ... )

I definately agree on your view for #2. It's like the created concept of God is to scare societies and in many cases have turned them vicious. The witch trials are great examples of this along with the daily fights in Ireland between the Protestants and the Catholics. Another thing- war. All wars are caused by two things: politics and religion.

1. No!?
2. An outgrowth of the idea that dreams and nightmares represent real places!?
3. What soul!?
4. No!?
5. No!?
6. No!?
7. No!? The rest of the world keeps on keepin' on, most of it as though nothing at all interesting has happened. You, OTOH, are dead, and aren't around to participate.
8. People should do what works for them.

Quick note: I was just wondering what you base your thoughts on, whether it be religion, experiences, media, etc...I'm certainly not implying they aren't valid, I don't want to come across like that. I am just curious what "resources" helped configure your interpretation of "non-existance" after death.

The couple of other times I've been unconscious for one reason or another. From my perspective the conscious narrative is unbroken, but somewhere, slipped in during an eyeblink, a coupe of minutes or several hours have gone by without me.

There's nothing there for that time. It's not like sleep, because usually when I wake up I have a perception of time having passed, and if there is no vague dream to be recalled, at least a chunk of conscious blackness. I'm talking about when there's not even that remembered nothingness. There's just... nothing.

That's what I figure death will be like to a dead person. Nothing at all.

That's a very good point, reincarnation is one aspect I totally forgot to write about. If anyone wants to address any other topics that coincide with the debate of the afterlife existing, please feel free to mention them.

I'm not quite sure what goes on in an afterlife but I think it's very interesting to read up about it.
I've always wanted to learn more things about it but it also scares me and when I think about what happends to us when we die also scares me haha.

1. To say whether or not there is life after death is a broad question. Obviously no one has a factual answer, but I don’t think there is. The concept of heaven and hell is one to scare the public into acting decent and appropriate to each other and life after death is a concept of life after death. After having a personal experience of seeing ghosts it’s odd to say that I don’t believe in life after death but I believe there’s something out there after you die-just not a completely blissful life or painstakingly harmful one after you’ve served your time on this earth. Something lingers out there but it isn’t this prefabricated idea of punishment for “sins”, which is quite silly, or eternal happiness for living your life “right” according to a book ( ... )
