Terri Schiavo

Apr 06, 2005 13:19

The first issue to be debated is the case of Terri Shiavo. The conflict had started when her husband, Michael Schiavo, wanted to get Terri's feeding tube removed because he believed that Terri would not want to live in a vegetated state for the remainder of her life. Her family lost many battles with the court to reinsert Terri’s feeding tube and ( Read more... )

Hey, No you stated your feelings. I appoligise if what I said struck a nerve. I have always had a problem seeing eating disorders. It is the one thing that just dont click with me. I do have friends who suffer from bulimia and it really just blows my mind on how anyone can do it to themselves. So Im sorry for my comment

No apologies olpluvr April 10 2005, 01:56:25 UTC
It isn't fair to apologise for a comment that you expressed but maybe it would be decent to apologize for the manner in which you presented your viewpoint (if you feel it is necessary). Everybody on this site has varied views and they will be expressed, whether or not everyone else wants to hear them. IN a way though, it helps to expand the mind to hear other points of view and it can possibly sway your own decisions in your standpoint.

As for your actual view, I have seen the uncanny and cynical irony in Terri being killed (term not used loosely) for overall having an eating disorder which placed her in this state. Of course, she didn't deserve to be there but bulimia is a disease that's hard to beat since it is an internal mental mind process. In actuality, Terri may have "done it to herself" a few times but once it becomes a habit, it becomes an addiction, then a fixation and it's hard to stop.

Just like cigarettes, like drinking, like gambling, and the list is continued. Unfortunately, she was on the losing end either way.

A subject which I think should also be addressed is what is the criteria a person has to meet in order to be euthanized!? My father has a brain injury from a blood clot and has a hard time walking/talking/performing some everyday tasks, will this someday be a legit reason for murder?! What's next?! I understand the whole concept of removing a respirator from a person who is legally "brain DEAD", because they cannot breathe by themselves and will die almost the instant the tube is removed. NOT 14 DAYS LATER!! Dr. Kevorkian was a mercy killer, I am wondering what you all think of that...do you think it's right to mercy kill someone who is terminally ill?! My opinion: A person has the right to choose if their life is filled with too much pain to continue on with living, but again, where is the line drawn?! People who are in the last stages of AIDS or a disease that is ABSOLUTELY not treatable anymore and is in excruciating pain should be allowed to chose how long they want to put up with the suffering BECAUSE they can voice their ( ... )

I really never understood that "mercy killing" idea.
You know you're going to die, you're not going to get better, you're already in a little bit of discomfort, all your affairs have been put in order... oh, sorry, you can't die yet... you're not in enough pain.
Yet.
How do you decide if someone has suffered enough to qualify for mercy?

I say we euthanize everyone involved with this ridiculous media circus.

Except Dubya; God told me he wants him to live. Big plans in store for the Bushie.

It’s what Terri would have wanted.

Something to Ponder... olpluvr April 28 2005, 22:32:03 UTC
What if Terri was in the exact vegitated state she was in before her death except she could speak. If it was true what Michael Schiavo said, that his wife wouldn't want to live and she voiced this same opinion, would she have been euthanized?

My opinion is that she wouldn't be because she would be proving her comprehension level by responding to what others asked of her. Even if she could barely respond, she wouldn't have been killed because the doctors would've said she wasn't in the right state of mind to make those decisions.
