Child Molesters

The Problem: Can child molesters be rehabilitated?

Most people would say that it is impossible for them to be treated. If you were to ask anyone walking down the street about this subject, they would most likely agree that pedophiles should be locked up forever. If this is the case, then why do many get out of prison, why do they even get the ( Read more... )

This brings me back to Dr Phil. :P
I think that after going through help and if they think the pedo is ready to go into the community then i think they should but I duno, people can be pedos and then not be pedos I think.. I'm not really sure though cause i dont know any and i'm not one.
I dont understand why people would want to touch little kids why dont they just get someone their own age :(:(:(:(
I dont have much to say but i just thought i should put some input on this post.

Nope, no way, uh uh!! ferret_angels April 11 2005, 20:13:16 UTC
I am going to add a quick note, I DO NOT think that child molesters can be rehabilitated. If someone has the uncontrollable urge to touch little children, and ACTS on it, then please tell me how they are gonna supress these feelings after given a second chance!!
I also feel this way about murderers who kill in cold blood, they do it once, and get a "rush" in a sense. Once they experience the "rush", it's like a drug to them, they are addicted and want it again, and again, and again.
This is a really touchy subject for people for various reasons, it will be interesting to read other's opinions.

Punishment olpluvr April 13 2005, 17:46:09 UTC
What kind of punishment would you suggest and why? If you believe they can't be cured, then should it even be a punishment since it is also an illness which makes pedophiles act in this manner or some sort of lifelong rehabilitation to keep it under control? Do you think these feelings molesters have can be suppressed through proper medications/ therapies or would it be a lost cause?

Chemical castration has also been a choice that molesters who want to abruptly stop these urges have had done by request. I don't know of many cases where this sort of "treatment" (is it a treatment?) has taken place. Certain states may require it to be done to offenders if they molested "x" number of children... which sounds to be over the top, I'm not sure. I think there have been cases where it was forced upon the pedophile, but I don't know under what circumstances/ which states make it mandatory.

This is a topic I could so debate heavens_baby821 April 12 2005, 05:10:26 UTC
Ok, Angie I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to respond but you know me and all this new crap blah. Anyways, this how pedaphile thing is something I really like to fight about, cause I have a young child myself, so it hits close to home. The way I see it is...All communities have more rights then the pedaphile for sure. They have the right to keep our children safe and out of harms way. Which in my opinion, we're doing a poor ass job. If a community wants to stop murders, and other violent crimes, it should eliminate molestation (child sex abuse) by convicting and locking up molesters as long as possible, preferably forever. It has been proven that child molesters cannot be rehabilitated. Studies of child molesters show that on average a child molester will assault 100 children during his lifetime. That just makes me sick. Doesn't it make you cringe?? The victim and others affected by this live the rest of their lives in fear. This isn't something you so easily forget. It destroys a victims self-esteem. They definitely are ( ... )

This is most definately the material this site is trying to promote: your opinions, as well as your concerns with the content presented. You have brought many different statements into play, which I will recap. All are great sub-categories within this topic to discuss ( ... )

Using your own sources, sex offenders have about half the recidivism rate of violent offenders. By the data we were presented with, 9 out of 10 sex offenders are successfully rehabilitated.

I also don't understand the "more rights" question. The community can protect the children by informing their kids about child sexual abuse... and if they want they can keep an eye on the RSOs they know about. Are you asking if I think the community should be able to harrass and ostracize certain memebers of their community and get away with it? No. It doesn't make it okay that they were convicted of a sex crime and more than it would make it okay if it was the 1950s and they were black.

As for "potential harm". Before they were arrested and convicted they were a "potential harm". Guess what? Most people haven't been arrested and convicted of a sex crime... but they are a "potential harm". If anything a RSO has less potential on account of being the evil that you know... unless of course the community alienates them making them want to ( ... )
