As far as I know, no one I know in Christchurch is dead. The thing is that you just don't know where old uni friends and the like may be. I didn't even know

Most of us aren't actually even in NZ. JK (bakaknight) was in Christchurch, but moved to Australia a few weeks ago. There were a couple of very tense days waiting to hear from phaetonschariot, but fortunately she's OK. Well. You know. Deeply traumatised and living in her dining room, but alive and unharmed, with bunnies intact.
It's weird being away from home when something like this happens. It feels weirdly personal, but at the same time, it's so distant.
There's a video on youtube of old film footage of an earthquake with liquefaction. It looks like the ground is boiling. Creepy is definitely the word!
Man, that first one doesn't feel at all uncomfortably voyeuristic. >.>
We have a family friend on the missing-probably-dead list. I haven't seen any other names I definitely recognise, though Dr Dominic Bell seems really familiar and I spent a while googling trying to figure out if he ever worked at my GP's office. I don't think he did, but...
Yeah, I was asking the cameraman to get the fuck out of a couple of people's faces there. (I talk to the TV sometimes. It's a thing.) It's like sometimes people who always have a camera between themselves and the rest of the world sometimes forget that there are real people on the other side of the lens.
My condolences for your family friend. Maybe Dr Bell's name just sounds familiar? I'm starting to feel like I ought to know it, but I'm sure I don't really. *tries to be optimistic*
Yeah I think I had a GP named Bell, but I have a feeling it was Graham Bell. I did go to school with a Dominic though so maybe that's why the name felt familiar. :P
Hey sweets, It's been a bizarre time and I'm so grateful for the internet for keeping people in touch!! Never read Youtube comments, but always remember if you do that they probably represent less than 0.01 percent of the population - the rest are too busy actually being decent people to respond. xxxx

Everyone in the video looks like they're half in shock. And the liquefaction is pure creepy.
