We found a picture published on FB of my stepson (who, besides being annoying, is amazingly beautiful) while he was playing "gay chicken". He was kissing another young man. Actually, their lips weren't quite touching yet, but it was definitely an embrace ( Read more... )

i had to look up "gay chicken" on urbandictionary.com. sounds like you could dispense with the "chicken" part, but it seems like you're right; lots of guys play it and it doesn't mean anything. used to be that most guys had some kind of homoerotic experimental play in their teens, they just didn't have a million cameras and fast easy ways to disseminate the evidence around the world. i doubt it had anything to do with stepson wanting a relationship, or even being gay.

my advice would be to try to get the picture taken down (not sure how the church would view that activity) and just otherwise forget about it. i bet he comes back from his mission with a much better sense of who he is.

Wow, a joke started on Scrubs is actually happening IRL?

But yeah, it's difficult because you're not his age, it's difficult for teens (he's a teenager, right? Sorry I haven't kept track of ages) to talk about that sort of stuff. Just try to make sure he knows that you are fine with whatever path he goes down as long as he's comfortable with it.

Having played gay chicken many a time (which usually just ends in me laying one on my friends...ask my poor friends), and having witnessed many a gay chicken episode from one of my nephews (which usually ended in girls squealing), I'd say there is little to worry about. Kids, even the beautiful and angelic ones, are kids. I am sure if he really, REALLY, had some reservations about his mission work or sexuality, he would come to you. I can't imagine a person more devoted or open.

Sexuality, as we all know, isn't a here or there thing. Many people don't figure things out until later, and on their own time. (I, myself, have come to terms with my heterosexuality...somewhat.) Gay chicken doesn't seem like a big deal at all, and usually guys do it just to get attention from girls (that's what I've observed).

I would tell him to take the picture down though.

I wouldn't worry too much unless you really think this will hurt his mission. Kids and young adults do this kind of thing all the time - it's silly stuff but a way to test boundaries. I did it. The problem isn't so much the gay chicken but that it's been taped and could be taken out of context. I think he knows you and his dad love him no matter what, and while you consider homosexuality acceptable, not everyone does. You don't want him to get in trouble with his church. It's just an appropriateness thing. Whether I was gay, straight, or bi, I wouldn't want my boss or pastor or mom seeing a video of me and Mandie making out.
