Boxing Day

Dec 26, 2015 12:44

One of my favourite days of the year. Traditionally the day when servants and tradesmen would receive their Christmas " Box" or thank you gift and when alms would be distributed to the poor. These days the tradesmen get their "Boxes" at Christmas but then a boost from people heading for the Boxing Day Sales. I shan't be shopping today, there's ( Read more... )

It all sounds lovely, peaceful and idyllic...and your trifle attracts me mightily!
We will also use up our leftovers today and have enough chocolates in the house from gifts so I'll have to freeze a good bit to keep them away from my now type 2 diagnosed diabetic husband.
He's being so good with his diet but all that chocolate threatens his willpower! And mine as well.
Have a lovely day, Deb.

Oh dear! If you hide them in a cool, dark cupboard they'll keep for a fair few months . Poor Manolo, this time of year it's hard to resist the many temptations.

Have a wonderful day Donna

Yes, he just got the diagnosis last week and is being very good. It's genetic in his case...hus mum was insulin dependent in the end.

I am trying...

I hope that with your support he'll manage it well and not have to use insulin.. but poor Maolo, so difficult

Open house is such a friendly concept; I hope you have lots of dear friends passing by (and that they help with the trifle).

It is disgustingly wet here ("here" is currently the northeast - no flooding, but persistent rain for the last 48 hours). Now that our traditional boxing day guests (my godparents) have departed, it seems vanishingly unlikely anyone will move from the sofa again!

It was a lovely day but there's a lot of trifle left.

Glad there's no flooding there and the sofa sounds like a perfect place to be!

Some people just rush off to the sales or the cinema but many take a quiet family day,go for walks, hold open house. It's lovely

I love an open house and it reminds me of Christmas with my grandparents who always had folk drop by for a glass of something and a mince pie.

Mmmm, trifle. My eldest insists I make one every year. What do you put in yours?

I like it too

Ohh my trifle is a once a year thing, fresh strawberries ( I freeze them in the summer) and sponge cake, both soaked in sherry, then a layer of jelly ( I use a veggie one of course which sets quite softly and soaks into the fruit and sponge) then a layer of proper custard made with eggs and milk and vanilla, then finally whipped double cream sprinkled with crushed Cadbury Flake bars.

Nice. Very similar to my usual one but I use raspberries. I use jam swiss roll or plain sponge. I do make the custard and use whipped cream and garnish with raspberries and flaked chocolate. I made a black forest one one year which went down well.

I use raspberries sometimes but strawberries seem to keep their flavour better when frozen

Yours sounds splendid!
