Women Voting

Sep 18, 2008 08:35

Women had to push hard to get the vote.  Many don't know what it took.

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago. Of course, Hawaii didn't really get to vote federally until after statehood in 1959. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

There's a really good HBO movie about the suffragettes that came out this year. Iron Jawed Angels, starring Hilary Swank as Alice Paul.

Thanks for posting this. It is really sad that I have met several young women who feel we have enough rights, and it is to much trouble to vote. GRRRR! Um did they hear Obama's speech where he wants to help women get equal pay? The fight for rights for women is not over! You can be rest assured I'll be out there voting.

Wow, thank you so much for putting a little perspective on this. I hope you don't mind but I linked to this specific journal entry from my Facebook to get some facebook apathetic voters to pay some attention.

Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party - please remember to vote. Don't waste the phenomenal effort these women went through because you hate the candidates, or its inconvenient, or hard, or boring.

History is being made

Amen.

I'm going to link to this, since you made it public.
