Curing debt by May 17?

Hi guys,

I'm in a world of financial woes and I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.

I'm getting married November 3.  I recently purchased $900 in wedding attire, a $150 starter Mary Kay skin care line, and $200 for contact lenses.

And, of course, I recently found out that I may be getting laid off from my job that I've been at for almost ( Read more... )

Thing to remember about ebay is that the fee is astronomical. They now charge a standard fee varying from item to item + 3.5% of the selling cost. If you accept paypal they also take $.35 + almost 4% of the transfer cost. Small stuff really doesn't make much money on ebay. (I've sold alot on there... larger stuff though http://mindticor.com I now have a store). Instead of ebay first you can look around at LJ selling communities. There are alot of them, and it will cut some of the cost of selling your items online.

I know any debt can seem overwhelming, but honestly I would love for mine to be that much! This year I've paid off $14k in credit card dept, and I still owe $6 (this is all mine and my husbands. Plus my daughter attends private schools (around $7k/yr.), because the schools around here are horrible.

I would suggest getting some retail job to work weekends. It may suck, but if you and your fiance get one, you could have all your debt paid off by the time (God Forbid) you ( ... )

I didn't know about the eBay fees. I have purchased a hand full of items from there but have never sold. Thanks for the heads up.

Looking into a retail job seems like a good idea. I get off work at 3:30, so I could get something part time for a few days out of the week.

You were very helpful.

Good luck paying off your debts as well.

Have you considered simply letting the debt ride until you find a new job? Paying the minimums, of course... because when you're unemployed, that cash will be more necessary and useful to you than a clean credit card. Just a thought.

All of your ideas sound really good - but I'd also advise that you look at your spending - cutting spending is easier than generating new money. You can sell your assets (I like amazon marketplace better than ebay for books and media). Cutting non necessities, whatever those may be for you, can free up funds - stop shopping wherever you can. That may mean less dinners out, dropping your cable, using the library - every little bit counts.

I was laid off on July 10 and was unemployed for three weeks. I was offered a job on July 10 (which was a Tuesday). The way the unemployment system works is that you get "paid" to look for full time work every week. The first week was a verification period, so I didn't get an unemployment check for that. I got a check for my second and third week of unemployment. Since I was offered the job on a Tuesday, I didn't look for another job during my fourth week. I was still technically unemployed though because I didn't start my job until the following Monday (August 6). There was a three week lag for processing paperwork, so I went seven weeks with two unemployment checks that were for half of the amount I was making at my last job. It was a rough couple of months. I got my first paycheck yesterday, so I'm slowly getting back up on my feet. Things are going well now. =)

Thanks for the advice though.
