Catherine stood at the waterfront, gazing out over the Bay. She could just make out small white peaks in the water as the wind stirred it. The Golden Gate Bridge rose majestically off to the west. She hugged her arms around her middle, shivering a bit in the nighttime chill. It didn't help that her clothes were damp from walking in the rain. ( Read more... )

"Fort Mason?" He didn't ask why, just told her he was on his way. He'd set the TARDIS off towards its destination before he put the receiver down in its cradle.

The TARDIS materialized directly behind her. A moment later the Doctor stepped out. He glanced at her, noticed her lack of umbrella and a certain look in her eyes. "Is everything alright? Did he... are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she said immediately, perhaps just a touch too insistently. "He had the misfortune of running into a pair of men from Torchwood today. Twice. First time before he met up with me... the second time cut our dinner plans short. We had to make a run for it. Separately."

She sighed. "It's been a hell of a busy day. I'm glad to see you. I... think we should talk, though. Preferably out of the cold."

"Talk?" I think we should talk was never good. He hadn't expected it for quite some time. "Alright," he nodded, giving her his best too-wide grin as he took her hand and walked back into the TARDIS.

Torchwood he had heard of. He'd even had a run in with some members once, on the Titanic. And that hadn't ended so well. Once they were inside, he put his arms around her, hoping to warm her up a little.

He was so calm, and so strong, and his arms around her just broke her hearts in two. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "I'm so sorry." She let her cheek rest against his chest, and closed her eyes, balling her hands into fists at her sides as he held her.

"Some things never change, do they? Thinking through the ethics of a situation before I jumped into it was never my strong suit. And it apparently never will be. I'm so sorry..."
