Since finishing the disappointing Winter's Tale, I've been reading Thomas Mann--a collection of his shorter works translated by Joachim Neugroschel. It's an improvement on Mark Helprin, for sure. I love your use of the word taken in this comment--so apt for the way one can feel at that age. I've never read "Death in Venice," but it's at the end of the collection I'm reading currently. I'm looking forward to it!

Somehow I managed go all through college and grad school without ever reading Mann. I'm making up for it now!

He's a German writer who won the Nobel Prize in 1929. I've read a couple more pieces since posting this, and I'm liking him a lot! I know some of his work is available online if you poke around a little... :)
