I'm definitely in the "struggle through an unenjoyable book and finish" camp. I hate leaving books like that unfinished. Glad you're into something good now!
I keep thinking I should give up that habit--it so rarely results in anything other than frustration--but I can't seem to overcome the compulsion to finish every book...
I think for me it's hard to feel I've been fair to the book if I don't finish it, or like I can't really complain about it if I didn't finish it. I did leave one unfinished recently, a weird one that I got through LibraryThing's early reviewer program (the writing was just SO awful).
Didn't mean to deter you from Hesse forever! But you may want to try something other than Steppenwolf if you do give him another shot... Someone was telling me I might like Siddhartha better, but I'm going to take a break from him for a while.
I haven't read the Game of Thrones books but my girlfriend has, and I know she struggled with the fifth one. If I remember correctly, she actually took a long break from it in the middle and read a couple of other things because she was so ready for a change.
