Martin Dressler, Martin Dressler... Or, to use the book's full title, Martin Dressler: the Tale of an American Dreamer. I picked it up because I've read several of Steven Millhauser's short stories in The New Yorker recently, and I liked them enough to want to read one of his novels. Your review is so intriguing to me. Maybe I'll check out Martin Dressler--my list of books to read is getting so unmanagable!

I actually really liked Helprin's Winter's Tale, but I read that in high school, so perhaps my perspective will have changed. But I did like the dreamscape NYC in the novel (that, I definitely remember), so maybe I'd find that aspect of Millhauser's book appealing.

I've, shamefully, never read much Ondaatje. That's something else I need to fix!

Well, I'd love to know what you think of Martin Dressler when and if you get to it!

I haven't read a whole lot of Ondaatje myself. Besides In the Skin of a Lion, I've only read The English Patient, and that was so long ago I hardly even remember what I thought about it. I know I loved the movie, though!
