I have been reading Binocular Vision, a volume of short stories by Edith Pearlman. The book is covered with blurbs praising Pearlman as an unsung master, an underrated but brilliant craftswoman of short fiction; there is an introduction by Ann Patchett that says basically the same thing. It seems like short stories inherently need to be a little messier than novels. They have the freedom to be messy where it wouldn't work in an novel due to length, maybe. Then again, I'm not one for short stories, so I'm not the best commentator!

As always, thank you for the insight. It really bugs me when I can't pinpoint what exactly about a piece doesn't quite move me.
