Dark Days

Jun 24, 2016 21:19

Well, the die has been cast. I was wondering whether it was a dark omen that the day of the referendum saw torrential downpours across the South-East while thunder and lightning were roaring/flashing above. It was as if the sky itself was maddened by the stupidity of it all ( Read more... )

Certainly, these are uncharted waters. But the government has got to come up with some sort of solution for the millions (millions) of EU migrants who've lived here for more than five years - and even the ones who've not been here that long. Quite aside from anything else, we can't survive without you! And for all the lies and bluster, Boris Johnson is power-hungry but not stupid - I'm pretty certain he'll be well aware of that. (It's worth noting that his early position was 'vote no to secure a better yes' - and that he waited until Cameron came out for Remain to declare that he was Leave. This is a man who wanted power much more than he wanted to leave the EU.)

Once you're 'secure' here of course you could still choose to move back, but at least you'll be able to make the choice yourself rather than being forced into it. Or the third choice, which I acknowledge would take a lot of thought and not be an easy decision, is to look at you both moving to a third country. I should think Ireland will do well out of this, they're ( ... )

I've calmed down a lot since I wrote this post, which was more or less an expression of my raw feelings on the matter. Not that I'm not agitated anymore, but it has been somewhat reassuring to see the outpouring of support and also annoyance at the result from the 48%. People realise this is important enough to not accept a leave vote without a fight, and it's clear that even among those who voted in favour things are going to be chaotic for a while. I almost feel sorry for Boris, who I'm sure knows that it's a bad idea and will be remembered as someone who made a very bad decision no matter which route he chooses to go down should he become PM ( ... )

It is stupid, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. I was going to say I hope you have a resource for reliable information so you know what your options are, but looking over Emma's post(s), it looks like you're getting good information from her. I definitely think that talking to an immigration lawyer is a smart idea too.

I must confess that I'm not well versed in current events, but it does strike me as a bit ironic that Britain gets all pissed off over the idea of Scottish independence (to say nothing of former colonies breaking away over however many centuries *ahem*) and then they pull a stunt like this. I certainly didn't anticipate the effect that this would have on the world economy, and I'm pretty pissed off about that; if you want to screw up your own country, that's one thing, but thanks a lot for screwing things up for the rest of us.

When I heard the news, I immediately thought about you and wondered what you were going to do. I imagine that even if you are able to stay, the emotional aspects are harder to deal with, considering that half of the population has effectively said "We don't want your kind here." It must feel like a personal rejection, and if it were me, I'd be very tempted to just say "Screw you, I don't want to stay here anyway!" (Not that I *would* do that, but it would be tempting.)

This whole thing is just so overwhelmingly stupid. I've heard quite a bit about people regretting that they voted to leave, politicians providing absolutely no guidance (I heard the Prime Minister resigned, and the leaders of the Leave campaign are nowhere to be found), Scotland and Northern Ireland want to leave the UK...it's so utterly ridiculous. This is not how democracy is supposed to work. The only good thing is that I read the referendum is not legally binding, so maybe it'll work out somehow?

Good luck, and I'll be thinking of you.

Hey,

I have to say, it sounds rough for you right now. Like you mentioned in your last post, I too had sort of stopped paying attention to politics (in general, I obviously payed attention to local stuff and LGBTQ issues and such.... but international political stuff is pretty well off my radar right now). I hadn't heard of brexit or was even aware that England had joined the EU.

However, when I heard about the Brexit vote and it making harder for immigration in Europe and that people might have to leave England, I did think of you.

Sorry, don't have much else to say that won't sound hollow other than I'm sorry this happened and I hope things work out for you.

Take care,
-Jeremy
