a top 10 of 2004 with a difference...

...so everyone's doing their top 10 releases and all that rubbish, so i thought i'd spit on all that and go with my top 10 things that i LISTENED to this year (well, that i can remember), and i'll say a little something boring about them, especially being i'm notorious for not remembering when something came out.

10. the fallen : i only found this band this year through the music mob, and they're now broken up after a brief but awesome round of gigging about town. they've still got mp3's on their site, and i managed to see them a few times. but i'm sad they bust up (rather recently, too). their site, btw, is here

9. pearl jam - live in melbourne : well, hey, i was there. heh. finally, first time i see pearl jam, a band that means a LOT to me, and they record the gig. my wife bought the cd for me (thank you rollcredit, i love you) hee. oh, and the cd's fantastic, but doesn't touch actually being there.

8. spawn soundtrack : i swiped this off rollcredit, and it lived wherever i was for ages. it's still one of the more interesting, and best, soundtracks i've heard. it also takes me back to fun, good times, jumping round like a moron at silly old goth clubs, late night 12-hour graveyard shifts on student radio in the middle of the night, etc... heh...

7. led zeppelin - physical graffiti : i finally found a copy of this cd, i'd been looking for ages, and i just about wore the two cd set out already. led zeppelin i feel don't need any introduction, but most people are into all their other cd's (like l.z. IV, etc.) but this one's my fave, far and away.

6. queens of the stone age - songs for the deaf : i love this cd. no, i LOVE this cd. i hold josh homme in very high regard musically. this is one of those rare cd's i *prefer* to sit through and listen from start to finish, rather than skipping songs here and there.

5. something for kate - elsewhere for 8 minutes : yes, rollcredit has been rubbing off on me (get your minds out of the gutter) this is the album i've always loved, and taken to playing over and over. i like the older, angrier paul dempsey in particular (eg prick), but there's no denying his quieter moments, as well (eg strategy).

4. mad dolly : well, i know it's cheeky to nominate yr own band, but 1) if you don't back yourself, who else will? 2) i actually have the pleasure of LIKING, no, LOVING my band 3) we recorded stuff this year, and were released on an industry-release compilation as well. our sound on cd, though a bit different to live, actually has worked out very happily indeed. :) now quit laughin' at me for listening to myself.

3. down II - a bustle in your hedgerow : this album defines, to me, what a stoner rock band should sound like. nice, sludgy guitars, tight rhythm section, real bluesy sound at times, too. and i love phil anselmo's voice here (as opposed to him in pantera - i still like, but that's something different again)

2. franz ferdinand - franz ferdinand : okay, this kinda snuck up on me. i found myself listening to it more and more and more, and before i knew it, there was one of these bullshit "nu-rock" or "garage" bands that i liked. they have so much more *class* i think is the thing these guys add. plus they can play. and have an ear for good songs.

1. nitocris - nitocris : i always seem to come back to this album at some stage. a lot of people don't know them, though, which is both unfortunate, and fortunate, because they're mine and a few others little secret. band is now defunct, they're from sydney, but i don't hold that against them ;) they've got pretty much everything i favour in a band - tight rhythm section, awesome basslines that aren't over the top, grunty guitars, girly vocals (and on occasion gutsy vocals), and quiet moments with that perfect touch.

okay, so now i've bored you all to tears, go make your own list, or something.
