Although this cases seems interestingly egregious, in general such a thing could happen in a perfectly innocent scenario even with no problems of powerful judges also having too many financial ties.
E.g. a judge should recuse himself from a case that involves a close friend or relative, right? So what if the judges are all close friends with the same guy by coincidence, and a case comes up involving him? In a sense the "algorithm" of law and justice simply isn't written to handle unusual test cases.
I certainly understand why the judges should recuse themselves, but that doesn't help this guy out one bit. There needs to be recourse for these types of situations.
