wish i'd been there. we had a pool-less bbq, also with poppers!
how do you make yours? i did the naive "slice jalapeno, remove veins/seeds, fill with cream cheese, coat in breading, and deep fry" and they only came out all right. panko plus egg was a cool texture but didn't stick, and couldn't stand cooking for quite long enough, tempura batter (chilled) worked better for coverage but wasn't as thick as i would have liked. together also didn't work out for the panko..
I cheated... filled with sharp cheddar; most got wrapped with bacon; those were in the egg at 350F for ~45 minutes (takes forever to cook the bacon). The ones without bacon went in for like 15 minutes.
