Why I love and hate Joss Whedon

I have an announcement to make:
I intend on throwing my shippery weight entirely behind my new OTP: Riley/Kennedy.

Because Joss is psychic and knows whom I ship. He is determined to kill off at least 50% of each of my OTPs. Like Wash. Wash! Wash and his Hawaiian shirts and silly jokes and bad poems and dinosaurs that made me cry when I saw them at the end. Why must the Jossverse be so full of random bullets and planks of wood? Because it's thematically necessary? Because Joss is a sadist who likes putting our hearts in a blender and making us enjoy it? I am still working on this one.

The humor was hilarious. Kaylee is my homegirl. I laughed every time there was a closeup of River's feet. (She does have great feet. I wish I were a dancer.)

I would have liked more twanginess in the music, especially because the sad funeral scene could have been gutwrenching with the right music (c.f. The Message.) And I would have liked more development of the peripheral characters. I'm not sure people who don't already know Wash would feel as sad about his death as they should.

Question: At the big Alliance/Reavers battle, why was there suddenly sound in space? Were they close enough to atmo that sounds could be heard or was it something about the ion cloud or was it a big continuity error?

Anyway, I am going off to rewatch War Stories and WEEP.
