Everyone loves to be loved. And they should. It's the ultimate, never-ceasing pat on the back, but instead of getting accolades for what you did, you get them for who you are. I agree with you: there are two types of love as you describe. However, I believe the second happens more often than you suggest; though, I feel as though you're almost onto it. Instead of "[reverting] back to the things that made us love what they are", we convince ourselves that that's it. And so, even while we may be experiencing that deeper "who" variety of love, that possibility is too frightening to face.
