아픈 목 이다

So, I'm on a self-imposed liquid diet.  For two days now I have had a sore throat.  Actually, sore throat is not quite correct, uncomfortable throat is more accurate.  It feels constricted, like a ball is plugging it .  Since it only hurts when I swallow, and swallowing in a minor part of my life, it has not been a problem.  I went to the health ( Read more... )

Sigh, that must have been part of the problem then. It seems my spelling in Korean is as awful as it is in English.

Since it has been a long time since I was able to sleep more than 5 hours *shakes fist* I do not remember many dreams. I used to dream in German a lot. They say that if you dream in a language you are fluent in it but what if you do not understand what anybody is saying, as was the case when I dreamt in German. I dream in Korean sometimes, but it is the opposite of my German dreams; in my 'Korean' dreams I am in the States with my family and nobody understands what I am saying. I remember one where I gave my grandfather's eulogy in Korean to a bunch of jingoistic, hick farmers (my grandfather lived his whole life in Bridger Montana; try to find it on a map.) So my dream Korean is the same as my aware Korean: nobody gets it. But the audiences are different.

Yeah it's definitely working its way in but burrowing might be a better word for it. I found myself saying, "I am expecting your homework" (a literal translation of 숙제를 기대하다)to a student the other day. When I realized what I had said I cried a little. I am reading a Korean novel, I can understand a lot of commercials, if there are Korean subtiles I can understand what is happening on TV. I am so close to understanding TV without subtitles (my ultimate goal) I can feel it. But my listening is still awful. I can usually get the gist but the details elude me.

Your sore throat might be the result of having eaten something too hot and perhaps you burned the back of it without realizing it. I've done it before and thought I was going to get sick, yet I didn't get sick. I then realized 'oh, I remember now, that piece of meat I ate directly out of the frying pan to see if it was done, was too hot'.

I cannot remember eating anything hot though. I am a big fan of luke-warm food and never eat anything hot temperature-wise. When it comes to spicy, well, I live in Korea; the options are hot and hotter. Koreans are very proud of how spicy the food is and ALWAYS ask me, 너무 맵잖아요? (no-mu maeb-jahn-ah-yo?) Which means "isn't it too spicy?" They are also under the mistaken impression that it is SO spicy only Koreans can really enjoy it.

The biggest reason why I think it is probably not a burn, though, is that it is getting worse. I am actually getting quite concerned. Also tell Gen hello for me. I miss her. I listened to Dar Williams the other day and I want to thank her again for introducing me to her.

No other signs of illness apart from the sore throat? It sounds quite severe; I hope it'll get better for you soon!

I've had dreams in French before and have also had a few occasions where I've talked to myself in French. It's always a little odd when I realize what's happened. Maybe your mind's use of 비섯 was deliberate as it's one of the (few?) words you can say without pain?

See, that is the strange part, outside of the dream, it does not hurt to speak at all, (lucky, or unlucky, depending on your perspective, given what I do. It only hurts when I try and swallow.
