Election thoughts:

Did McCain avoid talking about Rev. Wright because it is better for him that people think that Obama is a Muslim than to suggest that he is a black revolutionary?  Being Muslim is a different sort of racism that can easily be connected to terrorism and anti-Americanism.  Black Liberation Theology does do allow those kinds of ( Read more... )

So I read that Obama won your election. I don't know much about the election except that I'm envious America can elect a black man. Australia's always had white men. I look forward to the day when a Chinese lady is our prime minister.

Did you know Australians HAVE to vote? If we don't, we get smacked with a fine. I thought this was a worldwide policy but then I found out America was different. It's kind of 신기하다 to me but I'm not sure which one is better.

I just heard about mandatory voting in Aus 2 weeks ago. I can see the argument on both sides but mandatory voting feels un-American. The first probable reason for this is that Americans hate being told what to do. America has a strong libertarian streak and generally like to be left alone, especially by the government. The American Revolution happened because the colonists felt the King was meddling in their lives. The entire structure of the American government is to avoid meddling by the government. The reason the infamous second amendment ("the right to keep and bear arms") was included was because the Founding Fathers wanted the citizens to be able to fight against government tyranny and they knew that if the citizen were armed they would have to be taken seriously. Whether that line of reasoning is still valid is another matter, but that was why it was added ( ... )
