I have not updated lately because when I started this I wanted to avoid  writing an “I ate a ham sandwich” blog.  I wanted to only update when I had something to add.  Since coming to Canada I have been very low key.  Most of the “things” that have happened have been more emotional and of the kind that don’t lend themselves to description or ( Read more... )

I agree about UTLCOTHF. I like that Martin is a journalist and not an academic. He is very centeralist and lets the competing stories fight amoungst themselves and allows the reader to decide instead of presenting an agrument. I am now wary of Cummings' books; I had no idea how leftist he was.

I put the "veal" comment in for you! I know you have been thinking and writing about food lately, I thought you would like it. ^^

You should read up on the history of the Korean provisional govt. in China and 도산 (안창호). I'm going to be going to UC Riverside for my PhD in Lit, and I'm hoping to get in on the ground level of their development of the Center for Korean American Studies.

I have not read much about the Provisional Government, but what I have read makes it sound like the current government: rampant corruption, absolute allegiance to factionalism, scorched Earth politics and poorly thought-out policies. I would like to study someone as conflicted (he was an autocrat who believed in democracy) as 이승만, but lately I have found myself drawn to 조선 시대. In particular, I am curious as to why there so many abdications and Kings who died mysteriously? There seems to be a story there and I am curious to find out what it is.

How was "One Brother One Cell"? I've heard mixed things about it.

In any case, it's good to know you haven't fallen off the face of the earth!

I read it for the story but the Eng lit part of me has very mixed feelings. He is a good writer, or at least he could be if he did not try so hard to sound like a writer. He is very arrogant and ambitious and even though he has talent I am not sure it matches his ambition. It'll be interesting to see what he produces next. Maybe with time he will get over himself.
