Horizon: Can We Make A Star on Earth? is one of those brilliant, fascinating programmes on science that the BBC does so well. Even if it does have a slightly worrying title. (Clearly a star would be just as unfortunate as the black holes Cern are trying to destroy us with. Maybe the evil scientists have taken over ( Read more... )

How ace is that?

Did you see this programme? The 'Z machine (about 35.00 mins in) is the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

I've not had a chance. All this science means I don't get a chance to watch stuff about science :(

I'm less worried by the pop resemblances both real and imagined, but I'm more concerned about the fact that he looks about 19.

Don't put black holes in the hands of teenagers! God alone knows what would happen.

Why oh why oh why must young people with their hoodies and their large hadron colliders choose to waste their lives so?

Quite. Show 'em an atom and instead of doing something useful with it all they can think to do is smash it. And are normal particles good enough for them? Or couirse not. They have to drive them round and round in circles, at dangerous speeds...

The programme is wonderful. Equal parts fascinating/frightening. Not so much for what might happen if they can do sustained fusion but for what will happen if they can't.

And the machines. Oh, the machines.... (the S Korean one has ahuge flag above it and really does look like a Bond Baddie base. Well, they all do actually.)

Brian Cox? He annoys the hell out of me. It's his voice I can't stand it just sounds like constant forced enthusiasm - "science is really cool and exciting honest!". Bah.

One day I shall bump into him at CERN and trip him up I promise.

Have you noticed that he hardly ever looks at the camera when he's talking? Most odd.
