Generally speaking, in all the cultures that place a gender on the Sun or Moon, the Sun is male and the Moon is female. Mostly the Sun has to do with strong, masculine energy (fire and air are masculine as well), while the Moon centers in on the tides (water and earth are feminine).

Yes, and the cycles of the moon are approximately the same length as a menstrual cycle. :)
