Just a little Remus/Frank ficlet, done for today's 30-hath prompt: O hell! to choose love by another's eyes..

Fandom: Harry Potter.
Pairing: Remus/Frank.

Long after the Order meeting’s end, Frank remains in Dedalus’s parlour, curled into a corner of the sofa, silent and still.

Remus is looking for James and he knows full well that he should just turn around and leave Frank be. They haven’t spoken in two months. Not since the wedding. But instinct takes over; he takes a hesitant step into the parlour and asks “Are you all-right?”

Frank just shakes his head. Remus takes another step closer, and another. Frank’s gotten thinner, he realizes, thin and pale. “Hello Remus,” he whispers, finally, without looking up.

“Hello,” he replies; he hesitates for a moment, then sits next to Frank on the sofa. “You’re…you’re not all-right at all, are you?”

Frank finally looks up at Remus. He shakes his head again, before whispering “I missed you.”

The sound of those words give Remus a chill. “Yeah,” he says, “I missed you too,” and it’s nothing like he always imagined it would be. He wants to be angry. He wants to be furious with the one who broke his heart, but all he can manage is forgiveness.

“I’m sorry,” whispers Frank, “I’m…I’m sorry and I’m so afraid and Remus, I have to tell you…listen for a moment, please, because I have to tell you.” His voice is soft, wearied, raw. “Remus. I made a choice. I made the wrong choice. If I had known that choosing…choosing duty, choosing to get married, choosing her would cost me you, I never…” He pauses, takes a quick gasping breath. “Would you let me do it over?”

“You can’t re-write the past, Frank,” Remus murmurs. He knew coming here was a bad idea; he’s sitting far too close, and the air between them smells green like Frank and it’s making him lightheaded.

“Would you let me choose you?” Frank presses, fixing Remus with a sudden intent look. “Would you let me do it over, would you let me pick love over duty, would you have me back? I’ll leave her, I’ll do whatever you want, only please, I need you, I’ve been so lonely. I’m frightened,” he adds, and it’s the start of a waterfall of confessions, “Every time I close my eyes I see the Dark Mark burning there and it’s going to be me next that they find in pieces and I’m so frightened, Remus.” The hands he’s reaching out with are trembling.

Remus can’t help but take Frank’s hands and clasp them in his own. “I love you, you know that,” he murmurs, “But…” And then Frank sniffles and it’s all over; Remus is reaching out and gathering him close. It’s all too familiar, desperately familiar; Frank’s pale hands are caught in his hair in his robes and he’s not letting go.
