People as a whole can be extremely stupid, foolish, selfish, and evil, downright evil. They always have been and always will be. History is full of examples of humanity at less than its best and yet it's strange that people think that society is getting worse.
The only meaningful exchanges we have with people are on a one-on-one basis i.e. our direct connections also lead to direct examples, and this is the most effective way, the most significant way, and perhaps even the only way, in which we can effect change in our societies. And you're doing that already. Don't look to politicians or other "leaders" for the best in humanity - look closer to home, then look out along those connections from there and you'll see that in fact you are surrounded by the best.
