Sincerely disappointed in the Doctor Who "Companions" special tonight. Pretty much a recap of the previous season. Where was Martha Jones? Rose Tyler (arguably one of the most famous of the new era "companions")? Donna Whateverherlastnamewas? Sarah Jane Smith? Holy cow how can they not feature the amazing Sarah Jane Smith? I have GOT to start watching this show. All the other cool cats are doing it. I'm not sure I want to go all the way back to Season 1, though.. where should a newbie jump in?

To my mind it would be best to drop back to "Season 1" of the new series (from about 2005 or 2006). It's the best introduction if you're not familiar with the series (it goes back to the 1950's or so for the original series). That should get you caught up on Timelord lore and mythology enough to follow the adventure from there. Season 2 is the first of David Tennant, the most famous and favorite of the "new" Doctors who played the role up until 2010 when the new Doctor took over.

Pretty much, after a Season 1 introduction, you should be able to go to about any point in the timeline and keep up without too much trouble. The Doctor is a time traveler, so things in that universe aren't always linear ( ... )
