Indian Mediocrity

Mediocrity is rampant and pretty much thrives all around.

It is disillusioning when I try to find my niche or try and see what best fits me or interests me.
I was told of an opportunity in Media & Entertainment, a domain I am fairly comfortable with given my earlier stints.
But now when I look at what exists, I just can't relate to any of it. Will I ( Read more... )

Hmm, this post seems to combine two quite different things - "quality jobs", and "dumbing down".

The latter is everywhere - where did reality shows come from? Shows like "Big Brother", "Blahblah Idol" etc. have been popular everywhere, as deplorable/boring/dumbed down/..... their content may be. We can of course have a big discussion about that.

But the issue of quality jobs is different. I guess they get connected in your mind because you are looking at jobs in the entertainment industry.

As for stores, I'm sure you can find expensive stores which provide better service at a premium. That is not to say that service shouldn't be improved in general - but that isn't likely unless the owners really see a profit in it.

Are you implying that "quality" - media entertainment is an oxymoron?
I'd concur!
We ditched cable TV more than 10 years ago and not a second of remorse.

Let me run away before Dee smacks me on the side of the head!

Actually, I wasn't going that far :-)

I think quality and dross can coexist in the media/entertainment industry, and do. I was just underlining that dross is far from exclusive to India, and some of the most banal stuff on TV right now is actually copied from elsewhere.

I'm actually watching cable TV right now because I'm "on the road" - room pe to TV-ich nahi hai. Internet zindabaad :-p !

I agree with the last paragraph. We do seem to have a 'system' which doesnt like questioning and encourages uniformity/clone-like behaviour - whether it is the corporate world or the academic world ( ... )

Hi Dee!
Welcome (back) to LJ!
:-))

I'd expect there are boatloads of folks like you who are completely dissatisfied with the system and the opportunities! Entrepreneurship is a viable option! That's what folks are expected to do when in exactly your situation! Its not going to be easy, but get a group of friends together and start something new!

Take the leap! a bit like bungee jumping, but the risks don't end in a few seconds, and the thrill lasts a lifetime!

Do it! - let me know if you need a consultant to help you with your business plan! :-)

Hey Arun, trust you to be this beacon of hope and positivity. You're right about doing something and taking the entrepreneurial route...but what if you're lost and don't know what exactly you'd like to do.

I just think I am so damn caught & confused. So well...
Not that clear thinking like you. :-)

Lets chat when I will be in Mumbai in Nov or early Dec.

It take a while to mull the options!
Create a list of things you'd like to do
talk to other friends in the business
... and see if you can start something small.

I promise, this time we ARE going to meet
:-)
