The only light in Marie’s apartment came from the foot high Christmas tree on the kitchen counter. The string of lights glowed in the darkness, allowing Marie to safely navigate to the sofa. She still had the phone to her ear, aware of the fact that the silence which had stretched between them had now become awkward. And John didn’t seem willing to help break it.

She sat down, pulling her knees to her chin. “When you said you’d call, I kind of assumed you meant maybe in a day or two.”

“Guess I also wanted to check that you hadn’t given me a fake number.”

She smiled, her lips starting to tingle with the memory of the kiss. “I’m not the one who went all evil and joined the Brotherhood. I don’t do things like that.” There was silence at the other end, and Marie started to chew her bottom lip. “John?”

“Still here,” came the abrupt reply.

Her brow knitted together as she tried to work out how she’d offended him. “I didn’t mean-”

There was an exasperated sigh followed by John clearing his throat. “Can we talk about something else?”

She nodded, making a noise of affirmation. “Sure, anything you want.”

She thought she could actually hear his eyebrow raising, and she regretted the words immediately.

“Anything, huh? Okay, Marie. How about you tell me what underwear you got on?”

She blushed bright red, hiding her face in her hand. “John!”

He chuckled on the other end of the line. “Couldn’t resist. Mind you, given that dress you’re wearing, I’m wondering if you got any on at all.”

She took a deep breath, a grin beginning to form. “Well it’s not like you’re going to find out anytime soon now, is it?”

“Is that a fact?”

She stopped grinning at the edge to his voice, her stomach doing a flip as she remembered the way he’d looked at her cleavage earlier in the night.

“I think you should at least buy me dinner first.”

“Does tonight work for you?”

Marie’s eyebrows shot up. “Ah…”

“Come on, Marie. It’s a simple yes, or no.”

She took a breath, looking around the darkened apartment. “Okay.”

“I’ll meet you at that Italian place across from where you work. Eight o’clock.”

“Okay. Um, John?”

“Yeah?”

She started fidgeting, shifting into a different position. “You still wearing that suit?”

“Yeah, why?”

She shook her head, smiling broadly. “No reason. See you tonight.”

There was a soft click as he broke the connection, and Marie replaced her phone on the cradle. She’d just made a date with John Allerdyce. It seemed so surreal. Out of all the people from her former life, he’d been the last one she’d expected to see. Let alone make out with, and arrange to meet for dinner.

She closed her eyes, picturing the way he’d looked dressed in the suit and tie. A little sigh escaped her lips as she imagined loosening the black material hanging around his neck. Her fingers popped each of the buttons on his shirt, her breath quickening when she could slide her hands over the flesh beneath.

Her eyes snapped open. Her cheeks were flushed, her skin buzzing at the mere thought of the fantasy becoming reality. She ran her hands through her hair, shaking her head at the turn her life had taken. She stood up, kicking off her shoes as she went into her bedroom. She needed to get some sleep, but wondered if she’d be able.

Marie was surprised to find John already waiting for her. She couldn’t remember him ever being punctual and she glanced at her watch. She was ten minutes early. She smiled as their eyes met before letting her gaze drift down. She tried not to look disappointed at the fact he wasn’t wearing a suit. He still looked very good in a jacket and t-shirt. His hands were in his pockets again, and she half expected him to pull out his lighter when he removed them.

He looked her over before leaning in and kissing her briefly. “You look fucking amazing.”

She blushed, loosening the shawl around her shoulders just enough to reveal the plunging neckline of her dress. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

He smirked, guiding her into the restaurant. “Flattery will definitely get you into my pants.” He laughed as her skin turned crimson, placing a hand on the small of her back as they waited for the maître d’. “But I’m wondering what it is besides dinner that will get me into yours. I assume that the Iceman had it all figured out.”

Marie didn’t turn to look at him, her eyes fixed on a plant to her left. “If he did have it figured out, he never put it to use.” She sighed. “At least not with me.”

John’s hand disappeared from her back, and she tried not to be disappointed with herself. It had been he who had brought up her ex-boyfriend, after all.

“I’m sorry.”

His quiet words had her swallowing against a lump growing in her throat. She just shrugged in response. No more words had passed between them by the time they were seated, and Marie was successfully avoiding John’s gaze by staring at her menu.

Her eyes flicked up as his hand moved to pick up his glass of water, and she couldn’t help staring at the scars. “How’d you get them?” Apparently she also couldn’t help blurting out the question.

John’s face instantly darkened. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Marie closed her menu, glaring at John. She had no idea where the anger came from; she just knew that his answer pissed her off. “You want to fuck me, but you can’t talk to me? I haven’t seen you in two years, John. Give me something to work with.”

He placed the glass down, deliberately taking his time in setting it back exactly where it had come from. “Wanting to fuck you doesn’t automatically mean that we share everything in our lives.”

She abruptly stood up. “I don’t understand you, John. For less than twenty-four hours you’ve been trying your hardest to seduce me and make sure you insinuate yourself into my life. That can’t just be because you want a quick fuck. I know you, you’d never go to this much trouble for something you could easily make happen in ten minutes.”

John pushed back his chair, the legs scraping on the wooden floor. His lips curled back into a sneer as he stood. “You don’t know a fucking thing about me, Marie.”

“You’re right.” She wrapped her shawl around her. “You know where to find me when you’re ready to talk. Otherwise, go find some other girl to get a quick fuck from.”

She stormed out, refusing to look back.
