I can't think of any convincing hypothesis for why there's such a social regression in our society. I speculate that there maaaay be a vague correlation between economical prosperity and more liberal social attitudes, at least in the 20th century: boom years in the '20s, '60s, and late '80s to '90s seem associated with social progress, while economic downturns in the '30s, '70s, and this entire century so far seem associated with social conservatism and regression. But it's a tenuous association at best. And there may simply be a cyclic rhythm to social progress -- three steps forward, one or two steps back, repeat. Who knows. It's frustrating as hell.
