[There a moments hesitation before this Jap speaks.]

... I like this. It is a religion? A way of life?

Something between the two. Dwarfs live their lives by these Laws - to a degree of religious devotion, and it is certainly a life philosophy, but we do not worship, like most human religions.

Not many humans are so receptive to our ideas. I'm a little impressed.

Ah. You are perceptive to other religions.

And perhaps you have just not met the right humans.

On my world, I manage relations between my mine and fellow Grags, and humans.

There are some who try to understand. Most do not bother.

Shoulda just left the typo, but whatever. bunchasavages February 23 2011, 20:45:27 UTC
Stay in there, Frodo. I'll send you a light of Earendil to keep you company.

Oh, go away, if you're not going to be helpful, human.

If you tell me, in writing, that your ability to play was compromised, that your state of mind gave me an unfair advantage and you didn't play to your full abilities, then I'll accept that game as null and void. I don't need to cheat to win.

If your skills were uncompromised, however, then the victory stands, even if the Barge compelled you to play.

I'll ask for metalworking equipment. Any metals in particular I should request?

If you were losing, I admit I would have let you win. But... I have no idea how to play Trolls. You won on your own merit. Unfortunately.

Silver and gold, if you would. They can't be used for weapons, so I presume this would be acceptable to most. I wouldn't want this to be left between us, as I'd like to make... non dangerous items for others.

[So much smugness over winning. But he likes Ardent enough that he'll keep it (mostly) hidden.]

Perhaps you need to practice more.

I'll put in the request.

[After a moment's thought.]

How fine of work can you produce if you're given specific schematics? [He thinks he might be able to bargain with Ardent to make a few technical pieces that he doesn't trust the Admiral to supply.]

I'd rather not practice a game with such a blunt political point.

[There's a moment's thought over here.]

I'll have to practice. I haven't properly done metalwork since I was about 175. But certainly, to a higher standard than a human, and with practice, I could probably achieve quite a high standard, given the correct instructions and schematics.

It was unsympathetic. Your timing was poor.

Is this an apology?

deepdowndark February 23 2011, 22:55:12 UTC
It is. I reflected on it, and my actions of late, and they were, as I said, unfair and unsympathetic.

I didn't consider your part in it.

Then say that you are sorry.

I apologise. I am sorry. To both you, and him.

You never did explain those fully. Calling Dark. Speaking Dark. Opening Dark.

Will you?

deepdowndark February 23 2011, 23:30:22 UTC
I can, yes. Some of these are harml... hold on.

[He switches to video. He's not in the mine - it looks like the library. Ardent draws the symbol for the Opening Dark, in ink on some paper, then holds it up ( ... )

But why is the Calling Dark so dangerous? What...is in the Darkness that's so terrible it makes Dwarfs jump down shafts? Since you said it's your own thoughts.

I... I've always believed that the Calling Dark is being haunted by your conscience and unable to escape it. Being so caught up in introspection that nothing you do is ever good enough, that you find fault in everything, to the point where you believe that nothing you do will placate the guilt you have dredged up, and you are driven mad, to the point of surrendering yourself to the darkness.
